one of the all-time great third basemen who then went on to become a longtime announcer for the team he played for? how many rings, zero? f*** that. well wait, what about a pretty good shortstop (rizzuto) who played for a great team, won a bunch of rings and then became an announcer? he's what, like the 25th greatest shortstop of all time? BY ALL MEANS, LET THAT MAN IN.

There's no question that Santo as a player is better than some of the third basemen in the HoF. So it's pretty obvious they don't want to vote him in because they didn't like him clicking his heels. So how does a racist who sharpens his spikes and starts a fight with a handicapped person, like Ty Cobb did, get in then? I just can't wrap my mind around how some of these people got into the hall of fame with the stats they had or the personalities they had, but Ron still hasn't almost 30 years after his first ballot.

Well to be fair, Ty Cobb was a much much better ballplayer in his era than Ron Santo. Santo gets screwed because he is deemed as a borderline HOF player with a bad attitude during his playing days, although I personally think Ron is a clear HOF, not a borderline one.

Also to be fair to Cobb, he was voted in during an era in which racism was practically endorsed by MLB.

and going into the stands to beat up hecklers wasn't too damaging to a players reputation, seeing as how Babe Ruth did the same thing...twice.

Who the **** is Joe Gordon anyway? This is bullHowry.

Gordon was a 2B back around WW2. His case for the HoF is marginal unless you give him credit for missing two seasons for WW2, in which case he definitely deserves it.

the 17th greatest 2b of all time (at least in 2001), according to bill james. career warp3 of 94.2 according to BR.

ron santo is the 6th-greatest 3rd baseman with a 112.8 warp3. that's why i'm not going to cooperstown anytime soon.

I don't understand how Santo doesn't pass the common sense test for these crotchety old folk, let alone the statistical analysis to back it up. Common effing sense here.

Hey, don't forget the great Rabbit Maranville.

Well, Ron won't go into the Hall in his lifetime. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think Ron has too many years left.

It's so sad he won't be alive to see the two things he wants most: A Cubs World Series victory and election to the Hall of Fame.

to be fair, most of us won't be alive to see a cubs' world series victory either.

Ronny is in aleague with the likes of Don Mattingly, Andre Dawson, and Dave Parker among others who are teetering on the border.

Only he had a significantly better career than those three guys.

5th or 6th greatest all-time at their position shouldn't be teetering on the border.

Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but if Santo does happen to pass on before he ever gets voted in. Should it be an honor he got in or a slap in the face because he's already gone? I've always thought it would be a slap in the face.

I'd be happy regardless of when he gets in...predeath, posthumously...but the joys of seeing him hear that news in person, and the speech he would give, are what I TRULY wanted to see.

And now I won't see either.

Concerning the slap in the face, I think it depends on what group of voters is around at the time. If it is this same group, then yes. If it is David Wright and Geovany Soto, then no.

Are we not doing enough to get Santo in the hall of fame? Stuff like organized effort... trying to reach every member of the veteran's committee as much as possible to get their vote.

5th or 6th greatest all-time despite fighting diabetes back when we didn't know much about it or how to fight it. What he did under those circumstances is truly remarkable. I think we'd be talking about top three or better had diabetes not cut his career short.
