Wow, only 8 days till this? I dont remember it being so early.
I think it used to be in January but got moved up. I think it used to come after the announcement of those elected by the writers.

If I had a vote, I'd go with Santo and Allen. If Torre had played the majority of his career at catcher, then I'd go with him too.

I think a lot of people today who follow baseball don't know what a beast Dick Allen was. A fun fact with Allen: The only Hall of Fame 1st Basemen with a higher career OPS+ than Allen (156) are Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Dan Brouthers, Hank Greenberg, and Johnny Mize.

Is there any chance at all Santo finally gets in? I don't wanna get my hopes up again.

It's certainly possible. He fell 5 votes short of last time around, and the HOF is doing everything short of outright demanding that the Veteran's Committee elect SOMEONE to the HOF for once. If they elect someone, he seems by far the most likely choice.

You can make a case for most of these players, but Santo is so obviously deserving that I just can't see how a case could be made against him. How can he not be in the Hall?

It's pretty hard to fathom really, and concerning his original candidacy, there had to have been some form of collusion to not vote for him amongst the writers. At the time of his retirement, he was second all time in many offensive third base categories.

I often bring this out to illustrate what a force Santo was during his playing years:

Top 10 Win Shares of the 1960's:

Hank Aaron - 340

Willie Mays - 337

Frank Robinson - 307

Roberto Clemente - 260

Harmon Killebrew - 257

Ron Santo - 247

Mickey Mantle - 247

Willie McCovey - 237

Brooks Robinson - 233

Carl Yastrzemski - 230

There's also this:

http://nationalsportsreview.com/2005/03/02/ron-santo-hall-worthy-2/

Using TPR, Santo was the best player in baseball from 1964-1968, with a TPR of about 32.5. That is an average of about 6.5 a season and there were only three other seasons in this span that reached 6.5 or more. Santo went a little above 7 a couple of times, which no one else did. Aaron is probably second in this time period with about 22. Santo was in the top 5 in the NL each of these years and first three times. In WS, Santo had 164. Only Allen (170), Mays (169) and Aaron (167) had more in MLB over the years 1964-68. Santo was 6th in WS (with 249) for the whole decade despite not playing in 1960 and getting off to a somewhat slow start in 1961-3. The top six in the decade were

Aaron 340

Mays 337

Robinson 307

Clemente 262

Killebrew 257

Santo 249

James says that 15 WS is an average season, 20 is an all-star season and 30 is an MVP type season. Santo averaged 32.8 over this period.

Pete Palmer has Santo as the 4th best player in TPR in all of MLB from 1961-72:

1- Mays (84.6)

2 - Aaron (81.3)

3 - Robinson (64.3)

4 - Santo (45.3)

I so badly want Ronnie to get in, especially while he can still enjoy it. He'd probably pull some tears out of me during his speech.

because santo has continued getting closer and the HoF really wants them to pull their thumbs out of their ass and elect somebody, i do have some optimism. i have a couple of friends who live within two hours of cooperstown; i will definitely make the trip up there next summer if ronnie is being inducted.

I believe it was Bill James who said having the likes of Ron Santo on the outside of Cooperstown while having several other players who are currently in there (can't remember who he named) is like having cats and dogs in the zoo while letting lions walk the streets.

Too true.

I am already having trouble finding a room anywhere near Cooperstown.

The trouble I have run into is "Regulars" The local places wait until after the January annoumcements to allow for their repeat customers to book, then move on to the rest of us.

so when does the news come out? Monday the 8th?

MLB.com has an article up saying announcement will be made today.

Fingers crossed.

Where do you see that? This is what I got from the MLB.com site:

Ron Santo, Joe Torre, Gil Hodges, Dick Allen and Jim Kaat are the most likely to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by a Veterans Committee on Monday.

Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson, Luis Tiant and Maury Wills round out the ballot of 10 players whose careers began in 1943 or beyond that was analyzed by a Veterans Committee made up of the 64 living Hall of Famers. The results will be announced at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas on Monday.

Any player receiving at least 75 percent of the vote from the Veterans Committee, which consists of the 64 living Hall of Famers, will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame. Results from the Veterans Committee vote will be revealed at noon CT on MLB.com on Monday from baseball's Winter Meetings in Las Vegas.

Wow, I'm a massive idiot. I've been traveling so much and been out of my office for several days and it feels like a Monday to me.

Sorry.

Thanks for the info. Guess I will get ready to search right after the January announcements. If nothing else, we can probably get a room at the "lovely" Prospect Complex in Herkimer, NY, where we stayed for the Sandberg induction! We didn't decide to go until April, so we were just glad to find any room. But I wouldn't recommend it unless there were no other options!

is it somewhat sad that I am upset that I might not be able to view a potential Santo induction in Cooperstown because my wedding is that same month?

I planned my wedding for when the Cubs were on the road, no joke. (We took our wedding photos in Wrigley, on the field.)

The big reason Santo should have good chance at getting is that the number of players available for people to vote has been reduced from 30 to 10.
