The Veterans idea was a great idea. The Veterans on the other hand havent lived up to their end of the bargain. If they were ever to vote somebody in the HOF, Ron Santo is their perfect first choice.

I wonder if Joe was lying when he said this:

"I always enjoyed playing against him, and he's still underrated in that he did things day in and day out, and year in and year out...and I will say this, he will get my vote!" - Joe Morgan

Some other HOFers:

"Well, Ron was a player who could do everything, he drove in runs, he hit home runs...he dominated his position for a good decade and a half...and you can take Ron's statistics and put 'em up against any other third baseman in the Hall of Fame. He's the first guy I voted for....if anyone deserves the Hall of Fame it's Ron." - Brooks Robinson

"Ron belongs in the Hall of Fame with all the rest of us. Ya know, I played against him all of his career and most of my career, and, Ron Santo was as good a third baseman as we've ever had in the National League." - Willie McCovey

"He was truly, truly, a fine competitor, he was the kind of player that any manager would have loved to have had playing for him...I'll tell you one thing..he belongs in the Hall of Fame...I voted for him!" - Tommy Lasorda.

"He was a true competitor, and you talk about Ronnie, and you are talking about a guy who plays everyday for you, and I think he should be in the Hall of Fame because I myself know what kind of player he was. I think he should be in." - Willie Mays

I want the bastards who voted against Ronny to simply explain why they did what they did.

Morgan said that everyone feels like someone should be in the HOF, but they can't agree on who. I think they said something like each veteran voted for an average of 3.3 people, but no one came out with the requisite 75%.

I think what they should do is instead of voting separately, they should all meet, and discuss the merits 1 by 1 of each player, and then vote for someone. I mean its a committee, and theres only 10 players on the ballot to discuss, it shouldn't be that hard.

Scheduling 64 people to go to the same meeting wouldn't be easy. Even if you did it as a conference call, you're casting 640 votes... that's gonna take all day.

I think the better option would be to remove the stupid "you can only vote for this many people" clause and just let them vote yes or no on every single player. Then at least they have to actually have the balls to say "No, Ron Santo does not belong in the HOF" rather than the wuss excuse of "well, I thought these players were more deserving and I just ran out of spots".

Huh? I don't think there is a limit.

I know we have gone over this again and again, but why can't Ron get in? Does he not have the stats? Did he rub people the wrong way? Was he a showoff with his heel clicking? Are too many Cub players from a losing team already in?

Each member could vote for up to 4 spots

Make it an open ballot. I want to know who's not voting for Ronny.

I was going to ask if this was already the case. If it's not, it ought to be. I'd love to hear the rationale from these naysayers.

Dick Allen was the Albert Belle of his day. 40 years later it is clear that his fellows still hold animosity toward him. 156 OPS+ over 15 years and you get 7 votes...

I'm truly disappointed.

I've said it before, but I never saw Ronnie play and I'm not a stat guy. So I can't tell you if he actually deserves to be in the HOF. But his spirit and the way he overcame his illness to have such a great career is inspiring, and I'd like to think that counts for something.

The real shame will be if he is voted in after he passes. It sounds like that won't happen, but if it did, it just wouldn't be right. He deserves to enjoy this and we all deserve to enjoy it with him.

I believe that's what they used to do, and it led to some horrible choices.

The system has shifted from cronyism to elitism.

Exactly. It's not hard to figure out what's going on here. The question for a lot of these HOF'ers when they vote isn't, "does this guy belong in the HOF." It's "this guy wasn't as good as me, and if I let vote him in that lessens my accomplishment."

Pure selfishness and ego run wild.

Hmmm well maybe the problem there was groupthink then. That was my one reservation to the idea.

The HOF is an elite group. Isn't that what it is supposed to be - the elite of the elite?

Mike Schmidt

Eddie Mathews

George Brett

Wade Boggs

Brooks Robinson

Jimmy Collins

Frank Baker

Freddie Lindstrom

Pie Traynor

George Kell

Four certain HoF 3B. One decent guy (Brooks), and 5 guys that don't hold a candle to Ron.

When you're top 5 or 6 all-time at your position, you probably deserve in the HoF.
