Can we finally rule the Peavy talks as dead (and not coming back)?

Why?

Do we even have the pieces to acquire him anymore? I thought the Padres wanted Olsen?

So because we traded away one player that they wanted, he's no longer an option? If Hendry really wants him, then he wouldn't have traded OlsOn if it would have cost him the chance at Peavy later. Unless we hear something about the Cubs no longer being interested, you're overreacting. I doubt Olson was an integral part anyways.

Olson has like number 4 starter potential, he's not going to be a deal breaker. The Cubs just might now have to include Marshall in the deal or get a third team involved.

no, this isnt bcb

At Bleed Cubbie Blue they think Peavy is a Cub already and has been since day 1 of the Winter Meetings. That place is so unbearable to read. The posters there are awful.

Al hated talking about it and a few days ago, he made a huge post about Peavy. What a hypocrit.

i think it's fine. i was just commenting on al's "this isn't happening, just stop talking about it" mantra that he's maintained all offseason.

5:58pm: MLB.com's Barry Bloom heard from Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush that the Cubs have had "no talks about Jake Peavy since they were well-documented during the Winter Meetings." However, this doesn't mean that talks won't restart.

Bush said the Cubs could go into Spring Training without further changes, but sounds open to adding players if they come at the right price.

5:16pm: In an ESPN.com video Buster Olney says, "at some point you can expect the Cubs and Padres will again start talking about a Peavy deal" now that the Cubs have added pitching in trades.

Earlier in the winter, the Padres wanted more young arms than the Cubs could offer. Since then, the Cubs added pitching to the organization in the Mark DeRosa deal and created flexibility by trading for Aaron Heilman.

The Cubs could structure a deal for Peavy around prospect Josh Vitters and young pitching.

Doesn't the Cubs FO have to say they aren't talking to the Padres about Peavy? For collusion reasons? Or could someone like Hendry/Bush/Kenny say they are discussing him either with the Padres or internally? At what point does it become collusion? When someone comes out and literally says they are in the process of trading for Peavy? Or is it collusion if they even make the notion that they may be trading/talking about trading for him?

6:23pm: I just spoke to a source familiar with the Cubs' thinking. Hopefully I can further douse the flames of the Peavy-Cubs rumors - the Cubs aren't planning to restart the Peavy talks, and none of their recent trades for pitching were related to Peavy. Keep in mind that the team's ownership situation is far from resolved. - Tim Dierkes

The best we can hope is that Hendry is not allowed to sign a bum pitcher like Looper or Wolf to a multi-year deal and if we are lucky Ricketts will put new management in place as soon as he takes over.

Talking about players under another teams control in that manner is tampering, not collusion. Collusion is when the owners band together and agree not to pay a player or players a certain amount or not to sign certain players to drive prices down, etc.

thus ending today's vocabulary lesson....

Doesn't sound real to me but if it is wow what a crappy offseason.

With the acquisition Wednesday of Aaron Heilman from Seattle, the Cubs seemingly will end their at times very public interest in San Diego's Jeff Peavy.

They want to convert Heilman back to a starting pitcher, and the two players used to acquire him — infielder Ronny Cedeno and left-handed pitcher Garrett Olson — were part of a package that it was believed might have gone to the Padres.

Cubs management acted quickly after Tribune Co. determined the Tom Ricketts-led group as the winning bidder to buy the ballclub, and it is possible Ricketts would oppose any deal involving Peavy and his $63 million price tag.

"We've had no talks about Jake Peavy since they were well-documented during the winter meetings," assistant general manager Randy Bush said. "I don't anticipate anything happening."

Stellar journalism. Glad to hear we're not looking into Jeff Peavy.

How long was the Brian Roberts thread?

I'm not certain, but about 350 seems about right. Then again so does 450. Not exactly sure.

I would venture to guess this thread probably would've surpassed it had the old one not been locked. And had all Peavy talk been sectioned off to one thread.

2b - Fontonot

3b - Ramirez

SS - Theriot

Lf - Soriano

CF - Fukudome

RF - Bradley

C - Soto

Bench:

Miles

Gathright

Johnson

Bako

someone crappy like Uribe

Rotation:

Zambrano

Dempster

Harden

Lilly

Heilman

Bullpen:

Marmol

Gregg

Marshall

Vizcaino

Guzman

Wuertz

Cotts

Iowa:

Samardzija

Hart

Hoffpauir

Rule 5 pick gets sent back to Denver.

That team looks worse than 08. Hopefully Hendry has a significant move left in this offseason.
