amazing that Angel Guzman was the hold-up

we let a better young RP go for the privilege of Kevin Gregg

gross

Not the hold-up... more like the straw that broke the camel's back.

There probably wasn't any one player that Hendry refused to put in, he just refused to put them all in.

Yeah, I think this is pretty likely. I, myself, was starting to get worried. From the rumors it just sounded like Towers was going to push the issue until Hendry said no or gave up everything worth any remote value.

ESPN is reporting that the Padres are no longer pursuing a trade for Peavy and will move on to other endeavors this offseason. They'll still listen to trade offers, but they won't actively contact other teams to trade him.

It's on SportsCenter.

I think this buys Hendry some time. Sign Bradley, try to trade Marquis and then he can decide who exactly is expendable in a trade for Peavy. IMO

It's NOT Going To Happen.

With the financial problems that the owner has, something has to happen eventually. That doesn't mean the deal will happen with the Cubs, but Peavy will be traded.

Depending on how the first half of the season goes, I could see us getting him at the deadline. They'd get the last real cheap year out of him before his contract starts to balloon.

Furcal signing with the Braves is bad, bad news on the Peavy front, unless Peavy really, really has no desire to go there.

It COULD be, but signing Furcal doesn't mean they'll call up SD and see about Peavy.

How much salary flexibility did they have coming into the offseason? I'm guessing well more than enough for Peavy and Furcal.

Don't forget Javier Vasquez.

So there's a Yahoo.com story about how the Peavy deal is just on life support right now on the front page.

Awesome - this can continue for another few weeks.

Is that really news, though? I think most of us knew that no matter what they said, this wasn't entirely over with.

Hell, Bruce confirmed as much immediately after the deal was declared dead.

Its basically the Elvis of baseball trades. Its dead, and not coming back, but there are those who refuse to let go.

Somebody should change the title to reflect the recent news. Something like "Peavy Deal Undead". Let's crank this baby back up and steam our way to 200+ pages.

The Red Sox have "some" interest in Jake Peavy, but as of a few days ago the teams had not entertained any substantive trade talks as Padres GM Kevin Towers knew that Boston was not on Peavy's wish list. But now that talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have broken down, Towers needs a new team to deal with and the 27-year-old Peavy, according to his agent, Barry Axelrod, probably would OK a deal to Boston. But if there's a Teixeira splash, the Red Sox might not have the money to entertain it.

Not much he can do though, if the Padres want to hold him hostage in San Diego they can.

Perhaps the crapification of the Padres will lead him to expand his list of suitors, though.

Except they aren't trading him for %&its and giggles, they can't afford to pay him. They won't be able to hold him hostage much past the time paychecks start going out.

That might not be true any longer. I don't know if it's official at this point, but it sounds like Moores has caved and is putting the team up for sale.
