My favorite Kerry Wood memory will be from this season, in which I got to see him personally twice here in St. Louis. The first was the heartbreaking 5th of July Ankiel game which led to a lot of harassment post game.

Then on an emotional September 11, Woody got into big trouble in the ninth and proceeded to bring it to Pujols like a man who had just been challenged that he had no stones. That inning took years off my life. Woody brought it and got Pujols and it was one of my most euphoric experiences ever at a game.

i was at both of those games, too. i dont think i couldve survived another blown save at busch in cubs gear.

good luck, kerry. always will be one of my faves.

It took every ounce of energy to not swear in this post.

If I ever see Hendry I'm going to punch him in his [expletive] fat F@$#%#@$%@$# face and then kick him in his nuts.

I'm suddenly extremely depressed.

Sorry badger, you were the first thing I thought of when I read this terrible news.

A lot of the people who are bitching aobut this are the same people who say how stupid it is to give out huge contracts to relievers.

Letting Wood go was the right move. We can't give him 40 mil for 4 years and then pray that he doesn't get hurt (when we all know that he most likely will). It's just not the best for the team. It sucks, but it was a good move by Jim. I'm not even really upset. I like kerry but come on, we've dealth with him not being on the team for months at a time so we should be used to him not being around. I think sometimes Kerry is loved too much.

No we can't do that, thats akin to giving Alphonso Soriano a contract that will be paying him 20 million a year when he is 40. Or paying DLee as much as Albert Pujols is getting. Or passing out NTC like candy. So I ask if we have made all these crappy decisions in the past why stop now with the most beloved Cub since Sandberg?

And with Kerry Wood gone now, we officially no longer have any Cub jerseys for any active Cubs.

I think I'm done playing that game, even if I really, really, really want a Soto jersey more than any jersey I ever wanted.

Are people seriously trying to argue that since we have given out bad contracts in the past, we should continue to do the same with Wood? WTF?

If he really wanted this long term deal, it was 100% the right move to let him walk.

I thought it was 100% certain that he wouldn't sign for less than huge dollars over a long term deal.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'm guessing something like this is close to being the case, given the fact that Hendry and Wood met last night.

I was so pumped in 07 when he came back and actually stayed healthy. Soccer and I got to see him pitch in what I think was his second or third appearance, out in SF. His showing in the 03 playoffs was nothing short of epic, even considering getting roughed up on the mound in game 7. I've been a staunch cubs fan my whole life, but the day i became a helplessly obsessed fan was May 6th, 98.

This sucks :(

I was being slightly sarcastic. Everyone's taking that as sacrosanct. How do we know it wasn't just Wood trying to open the negotiations? How do we know what the final number/years would have wound up as?

Emotionally, I don't like the move. Wood was one of my favorite Cubs. Realistically, the move makes sense.

Wood will get a lot of dollars for a number of years from some team. Likely, more than a few teams would pay him well for longer than we would want to pay.

It's going to be tough getting used to the idea of Wood not being on the Cubs. And if he signs a 2 year deal somewhere, I will become majorly pissed. My guess is he'll get a four year deal, and I can really understand why Hendry would not go that long.

Considering he loves Chicago so much, why wouldn't he sign with the White Sox?

It takes 2 to tango.

I'm sure they will, but I wonder what would happen if no teams offered him a 4 year deal. Would he try to come back to the Cubs?

we won't get draft picks if we don't offer arbitration, correct? isn't this the organization formally announcing they will not offer, hence no picks?

IF that is the case I will poke out Jim Hendry's eyes and ... Seriously he has to offer arbitration. Has to.

Hendry is not an idiot. There is absolutely no risk to offering it this year. I'm sure if Wood would have signed a 1 year/10MM+ contract, the deal would have already been signed. I'm sure that he is just acknowledging the fact that Woody isn't going to accept arbitration.

This is true, it makes no sense not to offer Wood arbitration. Hendry whole reason for letting Wood go is because the amount of years and money per year. Hendry all along has been interested in resigning Wood for a one or two year deal. But Wood wants 3 or 4 years, and there's no way the Cubs are going to do that. It's sad to see Wood go, but this is the right move.

My W flag will be at halfmast tonight....So long Woody, we'll miss one of the truly great guys in baseball. I'll continue to wear my 34 pinstripes with pride next year and beyond.

I'm pretty sure Hendry knows this and I'm guessing Wood probably stood firm. They wouldn't just do this for no reason.

People are letting their emotional attachment to Wood cloud their judgment...big money to a reliever, especially one with Wood's history, isn't a good idea. Hell, big money to a reliever is basically never a good idea....

What amazes me even more are those that are somehow attempting to justify a potential bad contract for Wood by pointing to the other bad contracts we've handed out. Yay let's keep making more mistakes because we've made others in the past and what does it matter if we make more!

Yeah, it's just a mutual parting of ways. Kerry deserves to go out and get a hefty long term deal, and the Cubs should not consider giving him that hefty long term deal.
