I'll cheer for him. It isn't his fault that Jim Hendry pissed away money on Marquis, Fuku, and Dlee. Money that could of easily allowed us to sign Woody.

I really don't think there were any other factors than the fact that you don't give a guy with his injury history the type of deal he's going to get unless you are in desperate need, which the Cubs aren't.

There's no blame to be assigned over this, because it's the right thing to do from a business standpoint.

Emotionally it really, really sucks, though. I think I might vomit the first time I see him in another uni.

Well thats foolish then. He is no less a health risk than Harden. Peavy, who we are all dying to get has had arm problems the last two years and many are predicting more for him. This is a money issue. We wasted too much and now it is biting us in the butt. And yes it really sucks.

It's not foolish at all. It's a move you make even in a vacuum. And Harden is going to make less than Kerry will, and the Cubs are only financially responsible for him for 2009.

Sucks to see him go. Good luck, Kerry. :bye:

Hello, draft picks

I doubt those draft picks will bring us half the joy that Woody did.

Not, but there's something to be said with ending on a high note. I'd rather laugh at some teams misfortune if the last shoe ever drops than deal with the heartbreak of Kerry Wood's contract becoming an albatross to the Cubs.

We have enough of those...

I don't care if it is smart or not. Anyone who has been a cubs fan the last 10 years doesn't have to use their head when it comes to Kerry Wood.

The Cubs should give Wood a ring and 2009 World Series share. What is your favorite non-May 1998 moment? I'll never forget his behind the back catch against the Braves in the 2003 playoffs.

3 run HR in Game 7.

It was a 2 run shot

we won't get draft picks if we don't offer arbitration, correct? isn't this the organization formally announcing they will not offer, hence no picks?

IF that is the case I will poke out Jim Hendry's eyes and ... Seriously he has to offer arbitration. Has to.

Hello, draft picks

Do we offer Howry arbitration now just to be greedy with the draft picks? Even if he accepts, what will he cost? Around $4 mill. Worth the risk of getting 2 more 1st rounders.

It's too early in the afternoon to be drinking hard liquor. Put the bottle down.

Huh, I'm not sure I ever looked back at the box score since then. The more you know...

No one is going to sign Howry if they're going to lose their first rounder, which would force Howry to accept our offer of arbitration. Hell, he might decide he wants to come back and would accept it without trying to go elsewhere if we offered it to him. Not worth the risk, no way...

They are saying they think he'll get a multi year big money contract and they won't be offering one. They aren't saying they will not be offering arbitration.

Hendry is not an idiot. There is absolutely no risk to offering it this year. I'm sure if Wood would have signed a 1 year/10MM+ contract, the deal would have already been signed. I'm sure that he is just acknowledging the fact that Woody isn't going to accept arbitration.

We didn't win a WS for 90 years before Woody showed up. We didn't win one during his 10 years.

I liked the guy and his was always a good story, but he wasn't going to put us over the top.

A lot of the people who are bitching aobut this are the same people who say how stupid it is to give out huge contracts to relievers.

Letting Wood go was the right move. We can't give him 40 mil for 4 years and then pray that he doesn't get hurt (when we all know that he most likely will). It's just not the best for the team. It sucks, but it was a good move by Jim. I'm not even really upset. I like kerry but come on, we've dealth with him not being on the team for months at a time so we should be used to him not being around. I think sometimes Kerry is loved too much.

Completely baseless reasoning.

My favorite Kerry Wood memory will be from this season, in which I got to see him personally twice here in St. Louis. The first was the heartbreaking 5th of July Ankiel game which led to a lot of harassment post game.

Then on an emotional September 11, Woody got into big trouble in the ninth and proceeded to bring it to Pujols like a man who had just been challenged that he had no stones. That inning took years off my life. Woody brought it and got Pujols and it was one of my most euphoric experiences ever at a game.
