According to the New York Post (yeah, I know grain of salt, yada yada yada), the Yankees are prepared to blow away Sabathia with a huge free agent offer likely in the 6 years 150 million range.

One Yankee executive said, "we have to separate ourselves

So unless Sabathia really will reject the largest pitching package ever, the Yankees have the inside track. And if they strike quickly on Sabathia, they are set up for a big winter. They are not nearly as interested in Teixeira or Manny Ramirez as has been portrayed in some arenas. But they do want another big starter with Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett their next choices.

I see the image of a pitcher...his name is Tommy John. His arm is in a sling. He does not look pleased.

They can have him at that price. I hope he posts an ERA above 4 and gets booed ala A-Rod.

Though knowing Yankee fans, he could have an ERA under 2 but if he doesn't win 17 games they'll call him a disappointment.

I don't think the Yanks are opening with that high a bid. I can see them offering the Santana contract to open and going that high, but Cashman does not seem to want to go crazy here. People need to remember that Cashman is starting these negotiations and the Steins won't get involved until Hank feels like we are going to lose out on him. Then Hank may jump in ala george and go insane with the money. Cashman is about restraint, THANK GOODNESS!!

After hurting his arm sliding into second during an interleague game. Hank Whinebrenner orders the destruction of every NL ballpark.

I'm not convinced 6/$150 is going to get Sabathia. There's always the chance Brian Sabean or Ned Colletti does something stupid, and Sabathia actually seems like the kind of guy who isn't prone to just take the biggest offer. He'd be under a ton of pressure from the union to take it, though.

The Sabathia signing might be fine for the first year or two, but I agree that there's almost no chance of him getting through that contract unscathed.

Sabean won't go after Sabathia until after the contract he's about to sign runs out.

I hope they get CC, Lowe, Burnett, Sheets, Dempster, Teixeira, Manny, and K-Rod and don't make the playoffs.

I'm actually on the opposite side, I hope the Yankees swing and miss and EVERY major free agent. I could see a pic of Hank Steinbrenner with a sad face and two sack full of money with the headline, "Why won't anybody take my money." That would be hilarious.

The odds of that happening are about the same as the odds of a Padres - Orioles World Series in 2009, especially with Boras as the agent for many of them.

Would he? I doubt it. I don't think the union gets involved in pressuring players to sign with one team over another. If I were a player and they were trying to pressure me into signing with a team I didn't really want to sign with because they offered a little more than someone else regardless of my own family and personal concerns, I'd take great offense to that. That would be incredibly inappropriate on the part of the union.

I thought the Yankees were going to try to stay away from offering the world to free agents. Try to build more from within.

When you got the money spend it.

I don't think they wanted to add more payroll, but they lost a crapload off their books this year with Giambi, Abreu and others becoming FAs, so why not spend it?

It's already happened at least once with Glavine and the Mets.

And they do need pitching. I suppose, yea. I see $150million and I go "holy crap!"

Then I realize we gave almost that much to Soriano, and I go "holy crap!"

Anyone know what the dimensions of the new ballpark are going to be? Gotta figure they will have a more friendly fence for RH hitters.

Yeah, but wasn't Glavine the MLBPA President when he signed that contract?

Besides am I the only one who hopes the Yankees---with all their money and a new stadium---swing and miss on every major free agent this yr? I wouldn't mind seeing so more egg on Hank Steinbrenner face.
