do they have more LHP on their roster than RHP? i'm so confused on what kind of point you think youre making

It doesn't seem like I'm being that obtuse.

Every pitching staff in the NL playoffs did significantly better vs. right-handed batters than left-handed batters. How is it not therefore a detriment to have a significant portion of your offense tied up in right-handed hitting?

I'm not saying it's not a detriment, I'm saying that it's not a surprise that a league that has a majority of RHB has worse splits against RHP.

there are more rhp and rhb than lhp and lhb ... so it's common sense that splits against RHB will be lower.

I would imagine every pitching staff in baseball with a majority of RHP did better against RHB, how is that a surprise?

The NL as a whole had a much smaller split:

.260 .328 .414

.266 .341 .421

compared to the Dodgers'

.239 .301 .361

.268 .334 .396

Hmm, that's less of a difference than I expected. The Dodgers' RHP are better than the average RHPs, though.

It may just be a fluke of the last few years, but it seems like that happens a lot in the playoffs, which is sort of the point of my theory :)

Or maybe it's this: when you have an imbalanced lineup, you open yourself up to wilder variations in matchups. You can get matchups like the Dodgers, who were bad for the Cubs all along, or you might get a lefty-heavy team you can crush.

Where are the SABRmaticians? Small sample size folks, small sample size.

The only dude I'm ready to bury is Soriano because his approach was terrible at the plate and even at times in the field.

That being said, and I know this is beating a dead horse, he is a horrible lead off man.

Posted

If anyone needs proof of the existence of a supreme being, I offer the fact that this collection of horrible hitters scored 855 runs this season.

That cannot be merely an accident of evolution.

This team was exposed.

Our decent hitters can't go the other way to save their lives. Our best hitters can get busted with inside pitching since most of them can't catch up. They can feast on mediocre and worse pitching, but give them someone who can pitch worth a crap and they turn into the Pirates.

Blow up the team and get guys who don't look like fools against outside breaking balls or inside fastballs. I'm sick of this crap.

You know what the 2008 Cubs showed me? We sure can kick the crap out of the Pirates, that's what.

I like the "playoffs are a crapshoot, the team is fine" contingent. Six straight games now with basically this same squad and they've been obliterated in the playoffs. So let's keep trying with the same ilk.

I agree with Art Vandelay. This was the year to do it. I see this team as being possibly like the 2008 Mariners, you've got a team on paper and suddenly it all falls apart.

The Cubs choked on this one for sure, but the playoffs are a crapshoot.

To insinuate that the Cubs got into the playoffs by bottom feeding is patently ludicrous. This year's squad was quantifiably better than last year's in multiple regards. What happened is that the Cubs totally abandoned what made them successful all season, and played the worst defense I have ever seen for a few innings.

The Dodgers hardly obliterated the Cubs. The Cubs did a fine job of that themselves.

I'll put money down that come the end of 2009, the Cubs are Central Division champs again, with as good a shot as they had this year. What happens after that is anybody's guess.

Oh well, keep runnin' the same bunch out there, that'll fix everything, tell yourself it's a crapshoot next year too... if they make it.

Right, because the best teams always make it to the series....oh, wait.

Maybe we should just scrap the whole thing, huh?

Pretty much. No reason why they can't dominate the division again.

This playoff team isn't the same team we saw during the season. We played like crap, but give credit to the Dodgers. They pitched really well, played good Defense, and got timely hitting. No excuses - They outplayed and outclassed us. It was a special team and season that came to a tragic - if not shocking end. I don't think anyone could've of predicted a 3 and out, no matter who we played.

Only the Cubs...Seriously! "Wait til next year"! Meh!

Yeah, that's not what I said. The Cubs choked. I said that, but you must have missed it. I know, reading is tough.

But irregardless of that, the playoffs are pretty much a crapshoot. The 2005 Astros, 2006 Cards and 2007 Rockies can tell you.

No one said the Cubs aren't flawed. But to say they are bottom feeders who were exposed isn't accurate. They were pretty clearly the best team in the NL all year.

They are in need of tweaking, but to act as if they are incapable of winning without overhaul is absurd.

Oh, so we're playing the game where we kiss the ass of the other team again? I remember that last year. "Oh, gotta to hand it to that Livan Hernandez posting a 1.50 ERA against us, he's a savvy postseason performer!"

Give me a break. This happens every year too. Over congratulating the winning team. It's like nobody expects the team to do anything a team better than the Pirates. "Well, what are you going to do? *shrug* They're a good team."

Yeah, it's a real shame we don't get to play those crap teams in the playoffs.

Okay, I'll say it again (for the third time in this thread): The Cubs choked. They sucked. They were flat out bad. That fact and the idea that the playoffs are a crapshoot can be (and are as far as my point goes) mutually exclusive. One did not have to do with the other this time, but it does not disprove the notion. Not once did I say the Cubs sweep was caused by fate or whimsy. Not once. Yet you continue to act as if I did.

And yes, irregardless is irregular, but I didn't miss an entire statement. If you try to condescend to me while ignoring what I actually said, then we have a problem.

The Cubs were the best team in the NL during the regular season (beating many good teams, not just the Pirates, mind you), but failed to show up for the NLDS in any capacity.

What exactly is badness arguing? I think we are all in agreement that the Cubs sucked in the playoffs. They have sucked the past two years. This is the worst playoff performance in our lifetime. They need to add at least 1 lefty impact bat and tweak the team.

The problem is, the impression that the "playoffs are a crapshoot" crowd are giving off is a level of comfort with losing that is difficult for me to understood, and a willingness to roll the dice with this same squad that has gone 0-6 in the postseason yet another year, I can't fathom that.

It may just be me, but that tone seems pretty condescending. Plus it was just flat out irritating. When you put words in someone's mouth, you can expect them to get chippy.
