Don't be surprised if Harden goes along with prospects in this deal. I'm hearing that in order for this to get done they have to move Marquis salary and that Rich Harden will likely have to be part of the deal. I would also expect most of our best prospects to be included as well. If it means we get Peavy, then fine. But I would really like to keep Harden in this rotation for another year.

Surely we can pull this trade off, and then see if some team will take on Marquis for this year without us picking anything up. I don't care if we get a player in return who will never go above AA in his career. Just get his salary off the books.

If we give up Shark and Marshall, I'm not too crazy about dumping Marquis for nothing. If Harden and Z or some other combination of two pitchers spend any time on the DL, we'll lose Gaudin from the pen, and be forced to dig for a Glendon Rusch type of pickup to plug the hole. Either that, or throw in Gooz and hope his arm stays attached, or pray for 2007 Hill to emerge from the depths of Lake Michigan. I'm all for going for Peavy, but it'll probably cost us depth. As much as I don't like Marquis, I wouldn't give away the insurance policy he serves as for nothing more than saving some money. It's not like that $7 mil we'll save by dumping him is going to help add depth if we really are also bucking to bring back Demp.

That money could be used to partially pay for Wood, or a bat like Bradley or Ibanez.

I could be wrong, but isn't Marquis due to get $10-10 1/2 mil this year?

/puke

Found it. $9.875 mil in 2009.

Olsen is way overrated. How much does playing in a pitcher's park help him?

Last I checked, the Padres play in a pitcher's park too.

92 ERA+ for a career. Yuck.

He's 25. And he's been over 100 three out of four years. And he's got a fantastic minor league track record.

9.875 million. 7 million was the average number he'll have gotten over the 3 years, but the backloading has it at almost 10 this year. That's why if the Cubs can get rid of it now, they'll have made a little bit of a steal by only paying 11 million for the last 2 years combined.

So what's actually happening? No offense to the beat reporters on the radio, but I'd rather stay away from that kind of rumor-mill this time around.

edit: that goes for mlbtraderumors.com too....

I like that! I'd just as soon stay away from this rumor stuff, too, since most of it's untrue.

My take on it is that where there's smoke, there's usually fire. I think that a lot of times the details of rumors get messed up/made up/etc., but that the basic rumor (i.e. Cubs have interest in such and such player) usually comes from truth.

His minor league numbers aren't bad but I certainly wouldn't call them fantastic.

I pay attention to the player they are after and that's about it. I never pay any attention to the rumored "offers" and "names could include" stuff because that's usually just speculation and never ends up being right.

Quick question: Why do people call Jeff Samardjiza "Shark"?

Tell me where it is that you "hear" that Harden might be part of the deal and I'll answer this.

Scott Miller of CBSSPORTSLINE think the Braves are the front runners because the Braves are willing to include Gorkys Hernandez? Are you kidding me? There are two players the Braves have that could make them the front runners for Peavy and neither is Hernandez, and the Braves haven't offered either. Otherwise, if the Braves don't offer Heyward or Hanson, then the Cubs can equal or surpass the Braves offer. To me if the Braves want Peavy they will have to give up either Heyward or Hanson and the Braves are not exactly rushing either prospect to the table.

This may have been mention, but I wanted to put my two sense on the aboslute ridiculousness of saying the Braves are the front runners because of Gorkys Hernandez.

Honestly I wish I could. I have a friend who works in the media. I believe he/she heard it from someone else in the Chicago media.

Sure, some of it's true. The hard part is sorting through it all. And no, I don't believe Harden is part of the discussions.

It was his nickname at Notre Dame, for some reason.

He got it from preying upon weak secondaries (like a shark), if I'm not mistaken.

I thought it was because with his nose that, from a profile view, he looks like a shark.

Wade is correct. His teammates gave it to him as a poking-fun kind of thing.

Anyway, I asked Axelrod this morning if he could clarify the comments he made to Krasovic, a veteran reporter most of us refer to as “Kras.”

Axelrod took the time to send me an e-mail explaining:

“In my conversation with Kras,” Axelrod wrote, “he asked if there had been any approval in advance of trades to any team, as had been reported in some media. I told him that there had not been and that the reason for that is that we would want to fully analyze any potential destination team in terms of a variety of factors (ownership, management, farm system, ballpark, training staff, etc.), which would include the winning prospects for the team.

“Obviously, the personnel in the lineup would be a factor and that can’t be analyzed until we know who might be included in the trade going back to the Padres. The reference to Escobar was by example only. If you read the full quote, I said something about a team giving up three starting pitchers and a starting shortstop which would materially alter the makeup of that team after the trade. I could just have easily used Kershaw and Billingsley with the Dodgers or Harden and DeRosa of the Cubs. I was just explaining by using an example. I did not mean to infer that the Braves would not be acceptable if Escobar were no longer there.”

He added: “I have said that in some ways this situation is like free agency for Jake and that we are approaching it that way. By that, I mean that he has some choice in where he ends up and, in order to make that choice most prudently, we should take the opportunity to examine any situation where he might eventually end up. That is why we would look at team makeup and have an opinion on it. It would be unusual in a normal trade situation, but this is a situation where there is a full no trade involved, which makes it a little different.”

I also asked him if he thought the Cubs had assumed “the lead” in the race for Peavy and whether negotiations with the Braves had reached a standstill.

“I don’t know which team has the lead here and that is not in our control,” he replied. “Once the Padres tell us they have something on the burner and ask for approval, we will know who the leading contender is, but that has not happened.

and, oh yeah, pondering the Braves possibly including center-field prospect Gorkys Hernandez and pitcher Charlie Morton along with Yunel Escobar (the centerpiece from Atlanta’s end) in the trade for San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy.

Two questions:

1) what's the latest update?

2) who are our sources on news: radio, print media, blogs?

Thanks

Latest update is that we should hear something by Monday, apparently. The Cubs and Braves are the favorites, although the exact makeup of the trade packages seem a bit unclear.

The sources are pretty varied, but Ken Rosenthal was the one who really kicked this story into high gear. Kevin Towers came out and said that Jake Peavy basically won't be a Padre come next season.
