I wouldn't be inclined to resign Dempster at his asking price, but if we were able to somehow do this deal without giving up Marshall it would clinch it.

Trade for Peavy, dump Marquis, use Dempster and Marquis' money on Bradley and Furcal, resign Kerry Wood ... enjoy your winter, see you guys in March.

Levine just reported that the deal will involve Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall or Mitch Atkins

If that is seriously all that the Cubs are offering, what on earth could the Braves package be that the Padre's would even consider the Cubs offer? Escobar and a bag of balls is a better trade than that. Maybe Peavy is being stubborn with the NTC about not wanting to go to ATL if they give up too much, or maybe the Braves really don't want to give up Escobar, Hansen and other top prospects. Even if we threw in someone like Ceda or Castillo to finish it off that still is an average return. I guess everyone was saying the same thing about Johan last year, that it was going to take a teams top 2-3 prospects, and he went for a similar package. If thats all we give up you have to wonder if there is a third team involved, which has been speculated.

That would tickle my fancy

I'm guessing the Padres are under the false impression that Felix Pie is actually a solid prospect. Sell high Jim.

i think felix pie will turn out to do good

so, if he goes, i wish him well...he looked good in his few at bats in september...at least i thought so...

He'd probably have a little more value in that huge OF of theirs.

Emphasis on little.

I think that's the guy they wanted from us a couple years ago when we had interest in Greene.

If the Pads MUST move Peavy, I don't understand why he wouldn't just make sure he came to the Cubs over the Braves (especially if the offers are close enough that the Pads need to talk things out).

Why on earth would someone rather be on the Braves than the Cubs right now (assuming that winning is any priority)?

He's from Alabama or something like it.

And that window is, IMO, 2-3 years, not 1.

Even as the offense regresses a bit, a team with a pitching staff Peavy, Harden (assuming he does well this year and they keep him), and Zambrano doesn't need the league's best offense to not lose a ton of games.

Didn't I just say the window was 2-3 years?

And come on... you're really counting on Harden long term?

Really I'm terrified about the offense. Every key player other than Soto is old and many of them have shown signs of decline.

So Peavy wants to go to Atlanta cause he thinks they'll be better in 2012.

He tried for Pie twice, I believe.

Yeah, because that's exactly what I said, right? Reading comprehension can do wonders. Where did I even say he'd rather go to Atlanta? All I said was that it's not crazy to think he might feel better about going to the Braves than the Cubs.

I'm pretty sure most people across the league think he is. People love tools.

They might also love him for his performance in AAA.

Don't be surprised if Harden goes along with prospects in this deal. I'm hearing that in order for this to get done they have to move Marquis salary and that Rich Harden will likely have to be part of the deal. I would also expect most of our best prospects to be included as well. If it means we get Peavy, then fine. But I would really like to keep Harden in this rotation for another year.

And all I'm saying is that (strictly from a competitive standpoint) is that it is. The Braves aren't anywhere close to the Cubs setup men injuries or not.

It would make no sense whatsoever for the Padres to want harden as part of the trade.

Did this post get copied from like page 3? Is it your belief that roughly every report that's come out on the trade is false?

I'd love to know where you're hearing this (DeLuca speculated on Harden as a name), because Harden in this deal would make absolutely no sense.

Wait, what? I don't understand that statement.

And I never said anything that you're saying. I simply said that it's not crazy to think a guy might not think his best chance to win a championship is with the Chicago Cubs. That's all. I'm sure if he could choose he'd still pick the Cubs.

I'm loving that every single sign is pointing at this possibly being a huge ripoff in our favor. I thought I could see it a little more even with Shark, but without him it almost seems like any deal is a mammoth steal. Hopefully they pick us over ATL, and that Peavy realizes and vetoes trades to Atlanta because it hurts their major league club.

1) Harden costs nearly as much as Peavy this coming year

2) Harden would leave as a free agent after next year
