Padres cut Peavy finalists to 3 teams

Padres general manager Kevin Towers was back home in San Diego on Friday, sifting through the possibilities that will allow him to trade former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the Cubs, the Atlanta Braves or -- in a long-shot deal -- the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Those teams are the finalists and, sources say, no other teams will be considered at this point. That throws out the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and New York Yankees -- unless an unexpected hurdle pops up.

Nice to see Houston and St. Louis out of it. Now he just needs to hurry up and trade him to the Cubs.

Just got an e-mail from Churchill-

I heard this morning that a Peavy-to-ATL deal is getting pretty darn close. Sounds like the two sides may haggle for awhile, but the Cardinals, Astros and Cubs can't match the Braves' offer, or even get remotely close to it. ATL is trying to play that into giving up less, but Towers and company would rather keep Peavy until mid-season than get less than value for him.

The Braves are about to steal Peavy, one of the game's top five or six starting pitchers, from the Padres for a package that grades out half as good as the Bedard deal, and maybe as good as the Santana deal, when Minnesota had no leverage.

If I were SD, I'd wait. It's very possible that during the year, Peavy's NTC becomes less of a factor as he watches interested teams hover in first place, and if any of those teams were LAD, NYY, LAA or even Detroit, SD would likely get better offers.

I can't wait until we pay Dempster 60 million to have a 4.30 ERA.

Yes, this guy absolutely knows more than everyone else.

Or it's just more rumors and we'll have to see.

Well it's going right along with what Olney just said.

I just read that were preparing 2 offers with 1 containing Vitters and 1 containing Samardzija..

If this doesn't get done, I'm gonna be sooo pissed.

Chicago Cubs, breaking hearts since 1908..

Samardzija's agent already said that he'll undr no circumstances accept a trade. He's staying.

I feel like it was kind of a pipe dream getting Peavy. The Braves are offering up like their 10th best package and they're still in it.

BCB, I guess it's on Chicago Sun Times.. Just too depressed after that Bears game to go look.

On Homeplate on XM they made it sound like it was the Braves or nothing.

Which is why I'm thinking that the Cubs never really had a realistic shot and Towers was just using us as leverage.

In reality, the Padres would be stupid to trade Peavy to us. He's a top 5 pitcher and we don't have a legit centerpiece for a guy like that.

Hendry got something out of it, too -- the fan base is excited again.

If Peavy wants to win he should nix the trade and wait until after the ASB.

The Braves aren't winning with him and they will be in real bad shape without their SS. I'm kind of thinking that the Braves will get both Greene and Peavy.

Yeah....for a couple weeks. If we lose him to the Braves then the fan base will be even more depressed than when the rumors started. Now settling for re-signing Dempster is going to seem like a big failure.

I really don't see why Peavy would approve a trade to Atlanta if he knows there's a mandate from the higher ups to cut payroll. He can easily hardball his way onto a better team than that.

But sometimes I guess guys want to be closer to home (which I don't really understand, because the difference is a few hours by plane regardless of where they are unless they're ACTUALLY at home)....

I wish Peavy was more of an a-hole and just told Towers "trade me to the Cubs or I'm staying."

Unfortunately we'll have to settle for Olsen, who could be good. Maybe he could be motivated as he's a die-hard Cubs fan apparently.

Bleh. Olsen is not really good and going from Dolphin Stadium to Wrigley wouldn't help.I'm starting to get worried about what our rotation might look like next season.

Disappointed, yes. Depressed? Not so sure. Hendry is collecting all kinds of credit for nearly pulling this off. Wouldn't it be funny if he and Towers were just doing each other a favor? Regardless, I'd say the Cubs are better off with the Peavy buzz than without it, whatever the outcome.
