If Peavy doesn't go to the Cubs that will be 3 of the last 4 offseasons where we've missed out on our number one target. This would piss me off less than the other 2 though.

Huh? How is Peavy our number 1 target?

Our number 1 target from day 1 has been a left handed hitting 3/4/5 hitter.

Here's a wild thought...

Trade for Peavy and resign Dempster to fill the rotation, move Harden to closer in a Wood-like effort to keep him healthy all year.

I'm going to doubt Harden would accept that move.

I'm going to doubt Harden would have any choice other than sitting out.

Yeah, we know it didn't work for Jason Marquis. Baseball players only do what they are told to do. Please, it's major league baseball. If a starting pitcher approaching free agency does not want to pitch in the bullpen, you can be damn sure he will fight any potential move to the bullpen and 99% of the time he's going to win that battle (even if it means losing the war).

The player will win the battle 0% of the time. The ball is completely in the team's court. It's up to the team to determine if they want to make it a battle. If you think otherwise, ask Fonzie how well his protest to not play OF went, or Brett Myers when they first moved him to closer. A player is going to play where he's told. If the team wants to stand their ground, they can suspend him and not pay him if he refuses.

Okay, I'm stupid. Who the heck are you guys talking about? Omar Vizquel?

Besides, it's not really that original of an idea. I heard that idea bandied about a couple years ago on the A's.

I believe he still has the right to demand a trade.

Plus, who is to say that pitching out of the pen will keep Rich any healthier. Maybe taking the ball more often in a week will be worse for him. I would rather just keep him in the rotation and let him skip a start when he needs to.

The Soriano/Nationals standoff is exactly what I was going to mention.

They are talking about Hendry's odd obsession with narrowing down targets to specific parameters, ala left hand hitting speed guys, etc.

oic...how ironic that Vizquel happens to be a perfect match for the mold, except for the fact that he's old and sucks (which leads me to believe if Theriot goes in a Peavy deal, Hendry will target Vizquel after loosing out again on Furcal).

Finally some good news the Braves are out folks.

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Friday that he is no longer having active negotiations with Padres general manager Kevin Towers about Jake Peavy. This might not completely rule out the possibility of Peavy joining the Braves in the future.

But it proves after a six-week pursuit of Peavy, the Braves are moving on and putting more of an emphasis elsewhere to satisfy their need for starting pitching.

""We've notified the Padres that we're moving on to pursue other opportunities and players," Wren said. "We're no longer actively pursuing Jake Peavy. We have other options out there."

The Braves have always put an emphasis on building their big league roster internally. As this week progressed, they began to feel more uncomfortable about the package they were offering the Padres. Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, and either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes were believed to be among the players the Braves offered.

"A deal like that would have taken away too many of our internal assets," Wren said. "It doesn't make sense based on the way we think about building from withing our organization."

:good:

Could this be like the Cardinals saying they are no longer interested in Holiday and then boom! He is an A?

Jim, get Peavy, sign Demp (to a decent contract) and all is forgiven where Wood is concerned in my book.

Still not sure where this athletic left handed 3, 4 or 5 hitter is going to come from.

Braves end Peavy trade talks

From staff reports

Sunday, November 16, 2008

The Braves have ended negotiations with the San Diego Padres to obtain pitching ace Jake Peavy, according to Braves general manager Frank Wren.

Wren told the AJC he has informed Padres GM Kevin Towers of the decision. Wren said the team will continue to pursue starting pitching, it’s main offseason goal and could not wait on the Padres.

Starting today, Major league baseball teams can make offers to free agents previously with other teams.

That doesn't mean they're out. It's all posturing.

Except the Braves really can't sit on their hands for a few weeks and wait for this to deal to play out as the free agent pitching market gets picked clean in the next few weeks.

Now that Free agency has begun the Cubs are might be looking for two free agent starters if Dempster walks, even though the Cubs have options I don't expect them to want to wait much longer.

Towers really looks stupid with his "train has left the station" comment.

no more than Kinney saying that we more or less were getting Brian Roberts last year

If they got Peavy and then decided to give Depster a long term deal instead of giving Wood one year I think I'd flip out.

Everybody said we were getting Roberts last year...even Roberts was told he was going, so that's a pretty bad comparison

And I'm pretty sure you mean Kenney

Paul Byrd and Livan Hernandez, come on down!

Randy Wolf and Josh Fogg, you too!

Hendry is drunk and has a fist full of cash!

The Cubs, the other team in the heaviest pursuit of Peavy, remain interested in acquiring him, sources say. The team is intent on adding one starting pitcher, whether it's trading for Peavy, re-signing Dempster as a free agent, or finding another pitcher. Left-hander Randy Johnson is one of the free-agent pitchers in whom the Cubs are interested."

I bought up Randy the other day as an option at the back end of the rotation if he wanted to take a discount to play with Piniella again and contend.

yeah, him...you figured it out (ha)

Kenney's comment was dumb because he was on the receiving end. At least Towers is the guy holding the rights

Padres general manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday that he may seek to trade Peavy to the Yankees or Angels because of his inability to reach an agreement with the Braves or Cubs.

I think it's almost worse to say it when you're the one holding the coveted piece, although, in this case, everyone pretty much knows that they almost have to trade him... what is going on with their owner right now borders on hilarity
