5:46pm: Manager Lou Piniella thinks the Peavy-Cubs rumors are "only talk." At least, he hasn't talked to Cubs GM Jim Hendry much about it. Piniella remains fixated on a lefthanded hitter.

I think thats Lous way of sending a message to Jim, that message being stop dicking around and get me a lefthanded hitter.

The fixation on handedness in this organization makes my eyes bleed.

Didn't really hear much about it during the season when the team was scoring runs on everybody. But the playoff failure against "good' RHP only rekindled the fire from last offseason.

Sometimes I wish we could go back to the days without internet access when we just found out in the newspaper or on tv about the trade going down. Hearing about these rumors and then waiting for weeks/months for anything to happen is excruciating.

The Atlanta Braves, full-steam ahead in their pursuit of right-hander Jake Peavy, are offering a four-player package of players, and San Diego is expected to request that Peavy waive his no-trade clause so the deal can be completed, CBSSports.com has learned.

Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, said Wednesday evening that he had not spoken with Padres general manager Kevin Towers. And if that conversation takes place on Thursday, it still may be a bit before the Padres and Braves receive an answer -- Peavy is scheduled to fly home from a trip to Puerto Rico and will be traveling much of the day.

Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar, Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of two starting pitchers -- Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes -- and either reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke).

Well that's a let down, we should expect a Dempster signing for 4+ years and 50ish mil. I don't really like that.

As this has gotten closer to reality (for the Cubs acquiring Peavy), I've started to have a sick feeling that Peavy would be a terrible disappointment as a Cub. Either his injury history or his poor road stats would be magnified. I just can't imagine the Cubs giving up their #1 prospect in Josh Vitters in this kind of trade, and I think San Diego was demanding him.

Plan B - Sign Dempster for 4 years - $55 million with an option for a 5th year. Look at a second tier starting pitching free agent. Sign a left-handed hitting RF'er. Trade Marquis. Sign Blanco. Sign Wood. In no particular order. Count your blessings that we aren't on the hook for $75ish million over 5 years for Peavy.

I would rather be on the hook for 5@75 with Peavy than 4@55 with a 32 year old, one good season, Dempster. The offseason is not off to a good start. Hopefully this means we can spend some extra money in FA or make a trade for someone else.

Blaine Boyer is their cherry on top? Does it not matter that he sucks?

That would be like Michael Wuertz or Neal Cotts pushing a deal over the top for the Cubs. Interesting that Peavy wants to go to the Cubs over the Braves, if thats true, maybe there is some hope of it falling through but I think I am dreaming.

Our biggest hope is what I've been suspecting for a little while now, that Peavy wants to come here and has no desire to go to Atlanta at all. We'll see.

Yep. Assuming the latest report is true, that is...

Just earlier today, a report was saying "A Padres exec says the team has options, but nothing is close."

Also, this quote (CBS Sportsline) at least has a glimmer of hope in its phrasing.

The Braves want an answer by Friday, so they can figure out their free agent needs. Peavy is said to prefer the Cubs, but we'll see what happens if the Padres approach him to waive the no-trade for Atlanta. It hasn't happened yet.

This is why you don't believe crap like DonnieD posted.

I can't believe some of us believed him.

Man, you should have more faith. Even if I started this whole thing off by saying I would take it all with a grain of salt. Eventually you will all understand that I am someone who values integrity as much as anything in life. You are only as good as your word. I wouldn't stake my 5 year reputation (albeit one with few posts) on a "garbage" source. My source is VERY reputable. I trust my source more than I trust Bruce (who I have a lot of faith in) and much more than the likes of Buster Olney.

Someone mentioned that I post late at night and that is obviously true, so hold your horses people, it will all make sense eventually. I did not get a chance to speak directly with my source tonight, but I did speak with a couple of secondary sources that confirmed (again) that Peavy was Chicago bound. It should all wind down in the next couple of days.

Look back at the last few pages. They all pretty much confirm what I am saying. At least any of them with any credibility. Hell, many of them pretty much mirror what I am saying.

Donnie, I really want to believe you man.

What did your sources tell you then?
