Aside from Hughes and Kennedy, I dont know what the Yankees really have to offer. Melky Cabrera isnt any more enticing than Felix Pie at this point, and the Yanks may be more inclined to throw money after CC.

The Angels already have a great rotation, and again, I dont know how much they'll be willing to part with for what could end up a luxury for them.

The same article says that they'll probably exercise Giles 9 mil option...that's surprising, and suggests that the owners aren't putting as much pressure on the GM to slash payroll with their divorce going on.

So if we do get Peavy, and the Yanks or Dodgers get C.C., I wonder if the Brewers would make a play for Dempster. makes perect sense. Theyd have some cash to spend, plus theyd have some leftover to fill some more holes, which they do have plenty.

It's really only a $6 million decision.

Heres the latest on Peavs.

8:52am: Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, says they have not given approval for the Yankees or Angels. Axelrod reiterated that the Yankees would have to pay a premium (likely an extension). Towers said he doesn't believe the Angels would have to pay the same premium.

8:35am: Towers also doubts Peavy would approve a trade to Milwaukee.

8:03am: Let's kick off a fresh post for today's Jake Peavy rumors. A reminder of the latest news: Peavy has preapproved the Yankees and Angels, bringing his total to seven teams. Padres GM Kevin Towers indicated that Peavy would not approve a trade to Boston.

Towers referenced the Dan Haren and Mark Teixeira deals while indicating he wants quality over quantity back. CBS's Scott Miller has info on some players discussed. He says Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno, and Rich Hill are available from the Cubs. With the Dodgers, Chad Billingsley and James McDonald have been discussed. We know Towers wants more from the Dodgers, but Billingsley seems unlikely.

Towers said he played 24 holes of golf with Cubs GM Jim Hendry on Sunday, though he quipped that there was "more ball finding than fact finding for me. He was hitting the greens. I was trying to find my ball."

One source with knowledge of the talks said outfielder Felix Pie, infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitcher Rich Hill were among the names the Cubs were offering.

Sway him with those mad golf skills, Jim.

"There are a couple of clubs we think we match up with, and there are a couple he's interested in going to that we don't match up with," Towers said before joining his colleagues at an executive dinner Monday evening as this year's GM meetings officially kicked off.

We're probably the latter.

I wouldn't have guessed Jimbo as a good golfer.

Those names the Cubs are offering are garbage

Well, atleast Hendry throw the Cubs officially into the ring for Peavy.

And while that is legitimately a low-ball offer, it is still a better offer then what the A's got for Tim Hudson (Thomas/Meyer and Juan Cruz). My guess it the Cubs will have to included both Ceda and/or Vitters to go with Cedeno, Pie and Marshall if they want Towers to take their offer seriously.

Personally with th recent news that Peavy has said he would approve a trade to the Yankees/Angels, I believe this is a bluff. The Padres know that of the original 5 teams Peavy would approve a trade, only two would have even legitimate prospects to offer, and they are not the Dodgers. I mean Braves/Dodgers/Cubs/Astros/Cardinals. As debated, Astros was the first to be eliminated as they barely ave enough to acquire a guy like Maddux much less Peavy. The Cards do have intriguing prospects (Perez/Rasmus, etc) but the Cards are more interested in developing them instead of trading them. The Braves want Peavy, but are not willing to part with the top prospects (they'd be stupid, they would have Peavy for several yrs and could recoup these prospects by 2010-11), the Dodgers are the Dodgers and unless their willng to overpay for Peavy, they are looking harder at CC. So of the original 5, only two have legitimate possibility at Peavy, Braves and the Cubs. So you have one team with the legitimate prospects you want, but they are not willing to trade, and another team that have quality prospcts, but not the one blue chip you are seeking. So I bet Towers asked Peavy if he would help expediate trade talks by publicly saying he would open up the possiblity of accepting a trade to an AL teams. I think the inclusion of the Yankees/Angels to the approve list is nothing more to gt the bidding going for the Braves and the Cubs.

With that said, I till expect Peavy to be Braves, because unless the Cubs are willing to include Vitters and/or Ceda in the deal, I don't see the Cubs with enough quality to cover what the Padres are looking for.

Seriously though, I know how it works, you start somewhere, and go from there, but Pie, Cedeno, and Hill isnt even a serious start. Please take this once top prospect +2 pices of garbage for the best player in the league Padres. Who knows, maybe Uncle Jimmy will go all out and sweeten the deal with Carmen Pignietello. Who could refuse that offer.

Yankees and Angels are a Padres pipe dream, a complete fabrication

Those names are thrown around to bait the Cubs or the Braves pony up. Peavy wants to stay in the NL, so us Cubs fans should not be concerned.

Remember: Greg Maddux signed a 4 year deal with the Yankees in 2004, mainstream media is never ever wrong.

The Padres gave us Ceda for less than a half year of Todd Walker.

I still believe it would take something along the lines of Pie, Theriot, Marshall and Vitters. Even if the deal required Ceda be included, I don't know what Hendry would be waiting for other than hoping to land him for less.

The time to win is NOW.

I agree. If we did such a deal, with Ceda involved, we could probably land Greene in the prcoess and let him fight it out with Ronny for SS.

On a side note, what ever became of Todd Walker. He was always a serviceable utility man and lefty bat, but after a few stints with the Pads and A's, he fell completely off the map.

I agree, I think the Padres would take that deal and run for the hills if they can get it, but will Hendry offer it? I think he will. You possibly recoup some of those prospects by offer arby to Dempster and maybe Howry (if some team is supid enough to sign him before the Cubs offer). Even if you don't offer Howry, you still would get two draft picks for Dempster. So offering that deal of Theriot/Pie/Marshall/Vitters for a reasonably signed for the forseeible future Peavy is a pretty much a bargain. I'd understand if Peavy was a soon-to-be-free agent, but Peavy is under contract till 2011/12 so giving up the young talent to get Peavy would be justified.

And Hendry let Towers win at golf today, if you play.

After 100 years, and the 2008 debackle, Im all for mortgaging the future for the present, if it will get us a spectacular present. That way, we might not be able to net a Dunn or Abreu, but we still could have enough on the farm to pry Hermida away from the Fishies.

Peavey

Zambrano

Harden

I think the Cubs have an edge in the Peavy sweepstakes if they also agree to take Greene's contract. A Peavy/Greene package is a way to start the offseason for Hendry.

not only is it a way, it is an absolutely bloody fabulous way to start the offseason

then sign ibanez...done...

does anyone here really think we could land peavy and/or greene and still acquire hermida?

I would rather have Abreu,Bradley,Dunn ect in right field since were considering Ibanez who is a horrible outfielder.

Except Dunn and Abreu aren't exactly better in the field and Ibanez is cheaper. Granted, I'd rather have the other guys but wouldn't be too disappointed if we ended up with Ibanez.
