Padres To Explore Peavy Deals With Cubs, Dodgers

By Tim Dierkes [October 31 at 8:52am CST]

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Padres intend to explore a possible Jake Peavy trade with the Cubs and Dodgers at next week's GM meetings. Apparently Padres GM Kevin Towers would like to exhaust his possibilities with Peavy's five preferred NL clubs before engaging others.

Rosenthal notes that the Cubs do not have the quality young pitching the Padres crave. They still have interest in Peavy, especially if they fail to re-sign Ryan Dempster.

The Dodgers aren't keen on giving up Clayton Kershaw or James McDonald. Rosenthal believes the Dodgers have enough in-house pitching depth to buy out Brad Penny's 2009 option.

If Towers moves on to negotiate with the Yankees, Peavy will complicate matters by demanding his contract be supplemented.

I wonder if something could get done. :-k

Plz Hendry. I'd love to have peavy.

Could you imagine Peavy, Z, Harden, and Demp if we could somehow resign him too?

You have to figure that the Cubs would have a better shot at this point than the Dodgers. The Dodgers and Padres aren't as comparable as a rivalry in the Cubs/Cardinals mode, but they are a rivalry of a decent proportion. Dodgers fans and the organization itself are a bit "meh" when it comes to the Padres, while Padres fans hate the Dodgers. Namely because the Padres have never been a longstanding threat to the Dodgers. They are two completely different teams economically.

With that said, the Padres will want a boatload of talent from the Dodgers.

I'm just not going to get excited about this at this point, because I'm not convinced Hendry will be willing to put together the necessary package to complete a trade.

You would think that it wouldn't be that hard to pull the trigger on what amounts to a few really talented players and a couple of players that probably don't even figure into the team's long term plans. Maybe it's just the horrible 3 and out playoff showing that has me more skeptical than I normally am. I guess I'm playing my Jim Hendry card and wearing my emotion cards close to the vest.

It does appear as though it will come down to trading for Peavy or resigning Dempster.

You end up giving up young talent to acquire Peavy but get two draft picks for letting Dempster go.

For the love of God, its painfully obvious if we can find a decent package to trade for Peavy, we should trade for him and let Dempster walk. There's no need for Dempster if we can get Peavy, who is clearly better and more likely to be better over the long term.

Peavy, Harden, Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly seems unnecessary. We can get to the playoffs with Peavy, Harden, Zambrano, Lilly and Marquis. In the playoffs Marquis doesn't matter and we have an awesome, even better 1-2-3 than last year.

Well, since you put it that way, now you've got me all excited. BRB, got to go change my underpants.

As for your Dodger fan/Padre fan example, a comparison would be the Cubs (Dodgers) and Brewers (Padres).

The Dodgers plan to make a run at CC, I don't see them as a contender for Peavy.

This would make sense for them as well. I believe I read somewhere that CC's preference this offseason would be to play for a West Coast team. That should undoubtedly put the Dodgers and Angels in front of the rest of MLB in the Sabathia sweepstakes.

I haven't been up on the Cubs discussions that much for the past couple of weeks... is this actually more than the pipe dream it was when the story first came out that we were on his list??

It sure would be nice to have Sean Gallagher back. I *think* if a move like this were to actually happen, it would involve a third team.

The only problem is what would be the incentive for a team to give up a ML ready pitching prospect if they aren't getting Peavy back? Presumably, someone would have to give up a SP better than Marshall and get prospects back from the Cubs, lesser than the one they are giving up.

On a realistic scale, when you left it was a 5/100. Now its.... I don't know.. 15-20/100

I'm not sure those numbers are accurate. Peavy's short list of teams he would accept a trade to are Cubs, Dodgers, St. Louis, Houston and Atlanta, I believe.

Atlanta and St. Louis excused themselves from the discussion.

Houston is more than likely out of the picture due to a lack of talent, leaving it up to LA and Chicago as the two teams that the Padres could more easily deal with and have Peavy's approval. LA is a division rival and San Diego will likely pillage LA's top prospects to even be agreeable to a deal, leaving the Cubs in the driver's seat.

CC Sabathia could be more appealing to LA due to his free agent status and his desire to be on the West Coast, which secures the Cubs position in the driver's seat. I'd put the scale a little closer to 50/100. They have the talent to get Peavy. The question will become how ridiculous the demands will be and whether Hendry is willing to part with said demands.

I just don't think we have the talent, and I'm not all that certain that the Cubs want him all that much. I think they believe they would rather resign Dempster and keep the same rotation. Actually I think that the Cubs feel they have to resign Dempster because of the relationship with the team.

I didn't say we wouldn't be giving up a quality player.

a brief bit on RotoWorld made it sound like the Cubs weren't getting anywhere.

That fine with me. Lower the expectation in the case they decide not to persue Peavy (and you're an idiot if you don't persue a top of the rotation starter) and you don't devaste a fan base after such a crappy end to a season. I prefer the Cubs remain in the distance, and then strike out of nowhere, then to be considered a leader for him, only to watch Peavy go to another team.

There's no way they get Peavy and resign Dempster. It would be unnecessary and would cost way too much unless the Cubs are really going to expand the payroll. If the Cubs do manage to get Peavy, I'd much rather have them let Dempster walk and take the picks.
