I know it's the fashionable thing around here to hate on Jason Marquis, but:

As CubColtPacer pointed out, Marquis has given us 3 consecutive quality starts.

Furthermore, he's given us 7 out 11 QS since 01 July.

07/01 - 09/15 IP H R ER BB K HR PC BB/9 K/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA
Marquis 69.3 60 28 28 26 40 6 1074 3.38 5.19 0.78 1.24 3.63

07/01 - 09/06 AB R H 2b 3b HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Oppt 370 52 89 19 2 11 145 47 38 72 0.241 0.320 0.392 0.712

Now, these numbers aren't great, and they certainly won't make you forget the likes of Zambrano Dempster and Harden........ but for a guy with a history of stinking up the 2nd half of the season, how can you not love what he's done down this stretch ???

I call for a moratorium on the Marquis hatefest, and we get behind this guy today and let's cut the magic number in half !!

Go CUBS !!

memo to Vance: NO bodily function references today, ok ??

This is a classic Marquis breaking point. Just when he gets you to believe he's a very adequate guy to have in the 5 slot in the rotation, he goes out and completely craps the bed (sorry Fred). I expect a 5-6 inning 5-6 run outing from him tonight.

Throw 4 solid innings and solidify a spot in the playoff bullpen. I'd trust him for one inning over Howry.

Who at this point would you not trust for one inning over Howry?

Jon Lieber, Kevin Hart, Chad Fox, Carmen Pignatiello...

I hope Marquis pitches awesome and I think as a guy ,in 6th maybe the 7th, coming out of the pen in the playoffs he would pitch really well.

Derrek Lee last 8 games: .333 .351 .556 .907

Remember, when Lee gets hot, its usually not for like a week. It's for a month.

If 2 of Soriano, Lee and Ramirez gets hot, we should be in for a long run in the post season.

I'm pretty sure that if the Cubs win tonight, they will have their largest lead in 1st place since October 6, 1929.

I looked up several years to make sure I was right (2001, 1989, 1984, 1977, 1969, 1945-1929) and none of them had a lead larger than 9.5 games (in 84)

Biggest leads:

1906 - 20.0 GA

1907 - 18.5 GA

1929 - 14.5 GA

1910 - 13.5 GA

1918 - 11.5 GA

1984 - 9.5 GA

2008 - 9.0 GA

1969 - 9.0 GA

1973 - 8.5 GA

1977 - 8.5 GA

1932 - 8.0 GA

1945 - 7.0 GA

1989 - 6.0 GA

2001 - 6.0 GA

Wow. What's amazing is the team directly behind the Cubs is a game away from the 2nd best record in the league. It's not like the NL or AL west divisions where everyone outside of 1st is under .500.

Sheets has just come off a very poor start, hasn't he?

Although the Brewers looked like they had some life in them against our team yesterday, if they swing the bat as well as they did, particularly Fielder, they'll get some runs against Marquis

Outside of Fielder, they didn't look too impressive.

I didn't watch the whole game, but 3/4 runs came on Fielder homers. I'd say the rest of the lineup remains slumpish. Hopefully Jason won't help them get out of it.

Win these next 2 games, and the division's yours, Cubs.

Do it.

LOL!

The Lastros lost... nice, so 2 more wins against the Blewers and we have the division!

Oh it's so great... how nice it will be to rub it into the face of the ever-tiny Brewers Nation if we clinch at home against THEM. SOOO PERFECT!

Do you really need to continue to uses these [expletive] and completely unfunny names when talking about other teams? You've been doing it for the last week or so (at least as I can remember) and it's getting quite annoying.

I agree the names are pretty lame, but that was kinda mean, lol.

I was at the game last night and I was in complete disbelief last night when I saw Howry coming in.

I could not believe it. A close game, no less. It's not often I get that pissed off over a pitching change.

I really, really don't know what to say about that at this point.

Perhaps that needs to be a rant.

There's nothing more silly than reading the STL Today forums and seeing "Zambrainless throws no-hitter!" and the Seahawks referred to as the "Stinkhawks."

How original.

It reminds me of when he came in against the Astros 2 weeks back, except this time Howry actually got an out (barely...CC hammered one) before getting yanked
