Magic Number 4.

Time to make the Magic Number 2. Marquis outdueling Sheets will be one of the final crushing insults in a currently amazing September collapse for the Brew Crew.

Cubs 6 Brewers 4.

Fred, Omar, and the usual gang will bring you (useless, copyrighted Fred Hornkohl 16 September 2008) stats, photos, and positive emotion as we approach the division crown...

I have to go to bed.

Win these next 2 games, and the division's yours, Cubs.

Do it.

LOL!

The Lastros lost... nice, so 2 more wins against the Blewers and we have the division!

Oh it's so great... how nice it will be to rub it into the face of the ever-tiny Brewers Nation if we clinch at home against THEM. SOOO PERFECT!

That would be perfect, I know it may be an understatement at this point but, I mentioned to my uncles several weeks ago that the last three in Milwaukee would be meaningless to Cubs. Looking more and more like that is going to be true.

They can't clinch on Friday, but there are some pairs available to the Friday afternoon game on cubs.com right now. It just requires some refreshing.

What stops them from clinching Friday?

I think he meant that the fact that the lowest the magic number could be without clinching Thursday is 2 (if the Cubs split the next two games) and the Cubs play in the afternoon that day while Milwaukee plays at night. So the Cubs can clinch Friday, but the Cubs cannot clinch due to their win (they'd have to wait until Friday night and clinch if Milwaukee loses), so the fans going to the game have no possibility of watching the Cubs celebrate the division title by winning the game.

I'm guessing he means on the field,

they sweep they clinch on the field on thursday

they lose the next two they can't clinch at all on Friday

they win 1 lose 1, the brewers have a night game (I think) so they would only clinch after the fact.

And finally that makes sense after reading through it three times.

Sorry about that. I actually re-wrote parts of it a couple of times to try to make it more comprehensible, but it wasn't coming out very well.

On another subject...no matter what happens tomorrow, there's no way I could label it an Estes moment. Anybody going for their 4th quality start in a row is disqualified. While I would be surprised to see Marquis pitch as well as Estes did, it will come nowhere near the utter shock that came with the shutout that Estes threw.

Neh, it's more my reading comprehension than it is your writing at this point in the night. Numbers schmumbers, though: when the Cubs clinch, there won't be any mistaking the event!

Do you really need to continue to uses these [expletive] and completely unfunny names when talking about other teams? You've been doing it for the last week or so (at least as I can remember) and it's getting quite annoying.

Add me to your foe list then, because I'm enjoying it quite a lot. And I've been using them for 2 days... your time frame is a bit off.

When was the last time Sheets pitched well in a real pressure game...The Olympics? I know Marquis is no Curt Shilling but he has pitched well lately in some big games. I think both pitchers will be gone by the 5th or 6th inning and then it comes down to the bullpens...I like our chances with that.

Cubs 10-8

If the Cubs finish the string and sweep to clinch on Thursday, I nominate Mark to start the playoff thread, you big stud.

If Marquis beats Sheets, I'm declaring the Brewers dead.

I agree. I don't think we win tonight but if Sheets can't beat Marquis then the Brewers have no business being in the playoffs.

We win tonight though, I can't wait to see Harden try to close out the division.

Sorry Mark, no worthless stats today..... I'm in North Platte, and I've gotta be in Petaluma, CA when the sun comes up tomorrow.

You just keep up the good work !!

IMHO If Marquis does win this game, or at least put out another quality outing, he should spend the rest of the regulat season in the bullpen. Why? Because he would at that point have earned himself a playoff roster spot, and since it will be a 4 man rotation, hed be in the pen, so Lou should want to see what he can do out of the pen. Ive long been intrigued to see what he could do as a reliever, since more often than not, he pitches 3-5 solid innings before crapping himself in the 5th or 6th. I know that its an entirely different routine, which is why he should be given some reps to see what he can do.

Sorry, but if it comes down to Marquis vs. Marshall or Cotts for that final pitchers spot on the PO roster, Marquis should be given the nod if he is pitching just as well as they are.
