Situation Howry, all screwed up.....

I thought the city of Chicago seen the last of this sensationalist bum, but hey, he now can go even more public of his disdain of Ozzie and the White Sox. But why Trib would you sully you're decent name and bring in the biggest douche in Chicago? Was Sullivan and Rogers not enough, you needed to round out the the Stooges. Oh well, I won't be reading the Trib much

Other than what I read on FJM, I haven't read a baseball article from a sports columnist from a newspaper in a long, long time.

I have no idea what Mariotti's writings are like. Why the hatred?

Posted

For me, it's his face. That is the most hateable face I've ever seen.

I don't care if he were Mother Theresa and Grantland Rice rolled into one, if you can look at that face and not hate him, you are a better person than I.

So much for "newspapers are dying - internet is the future - etc" comments he made upon his departure from the Suntimes

Looks like he outlived his welcome at the Suntimes and found a new pack of fools to hire him at the Trib

He is similar to a lot of the sensationalist writers in Chicago, but he is more pompous, and I guess a lot of people hate that he doesn't show up to the clubhouse to cover games. He is the most obvious when he intentionally takes an unpopular side because he knows it will get the most readers and feedback.

I wonder if he'll still sprinkle his Cub articles with 'Tribsters', along with his other usual baseball-savvy words/phrases like 'Cubdom', 'Bartman', '100 years', '5 outs from the World Series', 'jinx/curse/goat'.

I like Mariotti, he nails it more often than not. He writes mostly negative stuff, but it's always better than the ridiculous spin Carrie Muskat has to write.

Wasn't it Mariotti who pointed out the difference the way the Cubs as an organization treat the White Sox rivalry? As in with respect. I don't remember anyone else pointing this out.

Muskat's job is to be a mouthpiece for the organization, it's not fair to compare her to Mariotti. And even if you are, Mariotti is a look at me hack.

Note that blog has a big banner up attempting to sell ad-space...

This and the Cuban story smell like an attempt to get a rush of visitors to this blog quickly.

Mariotti is a blowhard, the kind of guy whose goal is shock value rather than journalistic excellence.

His colleagues see that, and that's why they despise him.

Do you the story about Grantland Rice and the Ty Cobb self-promotion letters? As a sports journalist, you'd probably get a kick out of it.

When Cobb was 17 and in the minor leagues, Rice kept getting dozens of letters a month from "interested fans" and "faithful readers" who signed themselves as Jackson, Brown, Kelly, or Jones, etc. These letters, all penned in unique styles ranging from slanting, scrawled, Spencerian, and widelooped, all said things like "Keep your eye on Ty Cobb..he is one of the finest hitters I've ever seen." "Watch Cobb of Anniston, he is sure to be a sensation. "Have you seen Ty Cobb play ball yet? He is the fastest runner I've ever seen."

Rice finally wrote a column stating "there is a young man named Cobb currently playing who shows an unusual amount of talent." Because Rice commanded such respect, the Tigers and several other clubs sent scouts down to look at him.

It wasn't until 1951 that Cobb revealed to Rice that the dozens of letters had all been written by him.

I'd never heard that, that is awesome.

If he merely aimed for journalistic mediocrity, he'd probably be all right.

Nothing on the Trib's website about Mariotti coming aboard. And with that newspaper slashing its budget, I find it hard to believe it would hire Mariotti. Just not worth the headache.

Why the original self-promoting athlete. Man this story alone is much better then the stunts TO and Ocho Cinco could pull.

Can't really catagorize it as a false rumor when in fact the report had Mariotti in serious talks with the Trib and the Trib confirms that they did.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-080916mariotti-talks,0,2626187.story

Discussions between former Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Jay Mariotti and Tribune Co. about a possible role at the media company have ended, Mariotti said late Tuesday.

He said lawyers from the Sun-Times threatened to sue if he joined the company, claiming a jump to the competing news outlet would violate a non-compete agreement.

Mariotti and Tribune "talked about television, about the Internet, about the newspaper,'' he said. Mariotti said that discussions about working for Tribune Co.'s Chicago Tribune newspaper became a stumbling block. "The Sun-Times' lawyer threatened me with a lawsuit in 64-point type. Things sort of stalled,'' he added.

Executives at the Sun-Times could not be reached late Tuesday.

"At one point last week, there were lawyers on both sides looking into this,'' Mariotti said. "It's daunting to put together a deal. This [lawyer's letter] got thrown out in the middle of everything. We both decided that we can't do what we wanted to do.''

Sources at Tribune Co. confirmed conversations with Mariotti had been held, but Chicago Tribune Editor Gerould Kern would only say late Tuesday that "we have no plans to hire Jay Mariotti.''

But it didn't say "Trib and Mariotti in talks". It was posted on Friday saying he'd start on Monday. That's clearly false.

That's enough to say that his reason for leaving the Sun Times (print media is dying, need to be more 'net focused) was a totally bogus excuse. It's obvious that he couldn't tolerate working there when everyone else there hated him. He needs to move to LA where they welcome horrible writers like him with open arms.
