In this epic clash of titans, we have:

Mr. Bluetooth headset wearing man himself - CARLOS ZAMBRANO

Vs.

Mr. I suck at smiling - Josh Fogg

Carlos Zambrano is coming off two poor starts where he went a combined 10.1 innings, 14 hits, 14 ER, 9 K's, and 5 BB's. However, the Reds seem to be the perfect anecdote to his recent troubles. Nobody on the Reds roster has an OPS above .800 against Big Z and he absolutely dominated them earlier in the year when the Reds still had Adam Dunn and Griff.

Josh Fogg? Well, Josh Fogg is a bad pitcher.

Cubs win 8-2.

Same holds true for this series as it did for the recent series with the Marlins, Cardinals, Astros and Pirates. With this game and the Cubs take 2 out of 3 and all is well.

Get it done, Z.

Alright everyone, listen up.

To put it bluntly, the last game thread was disgraceful. It's one thing when people engage in banter, sort out issues on their own, and keep their overreactions in check. However, there were a number of people who were completely out of line. I don't need to go into any details, but a quick perusal of that thread will illustrate what I am talking about.

That kind of behavior cannot continue and will not be tolerated.

All of you should know the rules we have for NSBB and for Game Threads. Please stay within those boundaries.

This photo is hilarious for so many reasons.

Wouldn't have expected Hank White to rock the GQ look so effortlessly. I would have guessed more of a Frankenstein in an ill-fitting short suit for him.

I hear the new rule is that if you cant score 10 runs off Josh Fogg its an automatic loss.

As long as Zambrano hasnt pulled a Ben Sheets and decided that since theres a new ace in town he doesnt have to win games anymore we'll be OK here.

you have got to be kidding me with the pre-emptive warning at the beginning of the thread....do people really complain about something that is said at them, during a game thread, on a cubs message board? if so, GET A LIFE.

Z pitches well and we win the series. MIL is off today so 5.5 games up (6 in the loss column) by the end of the day!

In other words, we win and all is well. We lose and there will be hell to pay. ;)

Interesting game today for Zambrano. He has been struggling recently, but has giving up 3 ERs to Cincy in 23+ innings this year (1 ER, 4 hits in last 2 starts 16 IP). In the past, Zambrano has had trouble with Cincy, but the guys who have done most of the damage are gone. Griffey had a 1.047 OPS against him, Dunn is at 1.014 career vs. Z. The only guys with any kind of success against him are Votto and Encarnacion. This is a good time for Zambrano to turn it around. His next outing will be similar vs. the Pirates without Bay and Nady, who have hit him hard also.

On the flip side. If the Cubs throw out the regular lineup (same players as the last 2 days), every single Cubs player will have AT LEAST a 1.000 OPS against Fogg, including Carlos Zambrano!

No friggin excuse to lose this game today!

Seriously. What the hell is that? The "my wife just served me divorce papers and now I've got to take a picture" smile?

Almost as bad as threatening someone with their foes list..

This game will determine to me whether we are in a team offensive slump. Hasn't looked too great lately. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I know people will point out the 3 run inning Friday, 8 run inning Sunday and the 4 run inning Monday, but outside of those the Cubs have scored 7 runs in the other 42 innings. Meh, even if we are in a slump, I still think we are in the driver's seat.

They're not in a slump.

Did you really just try and show the team was slumping over the past 5 games by removing the 3 highest scoring innings from those games?

I didn't say they were in a slump, I said they could be slumping, and with a horrible pitcher going today we should be able to tell. I know that was a completely faulty argument, I couldn't find a better way to express my gut feeling (which being a pessimist I should probably never rely on).

In the admittedly small 5 game sample size I am referring to the team is hitting .239 .356 .377 .733. The ability to be patient is what separates us from other offenses (because all teams have peaks and valleys) which is why we've been able to have a couple of big innings to mask a potential slump.
