Thanks to everyone here for making this thread a huge step up from yesterday's debacle.

The offense has me a bit concerned, but a win is a win. :D

It's just a slump, as I said on page one when everyone laughed at me. We'll be fine.

People laughed at you because you arbitrarily removed about 11 runs of production from a 5 game span to justify calling it a slump.

No people still we're laughing at me after I justified my gut feeling by showing the Cubs were battling like .233 with a sub .300 SLG during that same time frame.

People only like the stats that are pleasing to them.

Yup, like taking out a bunch of runs and then saying the offense is struggling because they don't score much outside of those runs. Which *is* what we were laughing at you about, UMF.

It was a dumb argument get over it. I make tons of good arguments every week and I make one faulty one that I rushed to express a gut feeling and you openly mock me throughout the game thread?

I didn't realize it was you at first.

Feel free to mock the multiple dumb arguments I make. :D

Just got back from the game.

A win is a win. Kind of frustrating to stop scoring after the 3rd inning though. But oh well.

Kinda rainy and dreary all day. Oh well.

The final score of 10-3 sounds like a single game, not a 3 game series vs. the Reds at Wrigley in which both Ted Lilly and Josh Fogg pitched.

Why are you grouping Lilly with Fogg? Lilly is not a bad pitcher.

He does give up his share of home runs. Hasnt lately though.

ESPN just had a little screen stat about Z. He is now the active leader in pitchers for career HR, and has more career homers than Juan Pierre and Cesar Izturis.

And those two and something like eight times as many plate appearances as Z as well.

I hate to say it but I'm not feeling good about this game.

What does that even mean?

Meaning I thought we were going to blow it. CUBS WIN!!!!

Glad my feelings where ill-advised!

I knew what you meant, just don't understand why.

You don't understand why with a 1 run lead we could conceivably blow the game?

I know very well Mr. Wood could blow a game with a 1 run lead. But couldn't it be said that with every game with a 1, or even 2 run lead that you don't have a good feeling?

It could. This was a odd conversation.

Just trying to remove all the negativity. The 2008 Cubs are a different breed of bear.

Out of curiosity, has any qualified pitcher ever had a higher BA than his ERA?

I'm pretty sure at least Babe Ruth has done that. Probably plenty more in the early 1900's. Since the WWII era, though, possibly not.

In 1925, Walter Johnson posted this line batting:

.433 .455 .577 163(OPS+)

and was 20-7 with a 3.07 ERA(137 ERA+) in 29 starts( 30 games total).

Babe Ruth had BA's of .272(121 OPS+) and .325(162 OPS+) in 1916 and 1917. He posted ERA's of 1.75(41 starts) and 2.01(38 starts) in those two years.

BTW, Z has an OPS+ of 147 this year. Not too bad at all.

I just used Johnson and Ruth because they seemed like the most obvious ones to me, I'm sure there are plenty of others.

In '98 Maddux hit .240 and had an ERA of 2.22.

EDIT: Just looked. Mike Hampton hit .311 and had an ERA of 2.90 in 99.
