I'd really like to know why Giles doesn't want to play in Boston.

He's from San Diego.

So? His list is 8 teams right? Why on earth would the Red Sox be one of them? There are so many worse teams to play for and worse cities to live in. You'd think he'd be tired of all the losing in Pitt and now SD and would want a chance for a world series.

There are other places he can go to get a chance at a World Series - Boston isn't the only option. Maybe he just doesn't like Boston.

No, I get that. I just don't understand why a team like the Reds, Royals, or Blue Jays would not be on there, but Boston would. Obviously there's something about Boston or the Red Sox that he really doesn't like and I'm just curious as to what that is. That's all.

He didn't see in the near future those teams being in contention and needing to trade for him. When guys have a limited no trade clause, you'll see them leave off terrible teams because they figure it's a waste to have them on there because they're never going to try and trade for him in the first place.

Not surprised at him blocking the trade. He's made it well known that he wants to stay on the West Coast. I guess I don't understand that thinking when you have a chance to actually play in the playoffs, but to each his own.

Call me crazy, but I can see how sitting on the bench watching a bunch of guys you've been teammates with for a couple months, on a team and city you've got no ties to, try and win a World Series isn't particularly appealing to a guy like Giles.

I mean is that the sort of championship experience that he'd cherish for years and years?

I'm guessing that those criticizing Giles have never been in a situation where you're often away from your kids for extended periods of time. I think saying he enjoys losing is idiotic. It would be fair to say that he has something that ranks as a higher priority to him than baseball though.

then why is he even playing anymore, then? he's on the road already. if being with his family is such a high priority to him, he should just retire.

When does Giles's current contract end?

I think if the Padres don't pick up his option, he's a free agent after the season. And seeing as rumor has it that Towers offered up Giles to the Cubs before the deadline, and IMO had a deal in place for Giles to go to Boston--to which Giles vetoed---I get the distinct impression the Padres won't be picking up the option for next yr.

So he could've gone to Boston for two months + chance to get a ring on his finger, asked them not to pick up his option, and returned to the West Coast.

Epic fail.

Why can't people accept the fact that there are players who have no desire to play for New York and/or Boston and/or East Coast, or West Coast, etc, etc. That doesn't mean he doesn't want to win. That doesn't mean he doesn't have the desire. It's just means he doesn't like Boston. But something tells me, if he is a FA this offseason, it wouldn't surprise if Giles ends up in St. Louis.

Maybe he's decided getting paid millions of dollars is worth being away from his family for 80 or so days a year, but not 200 days.

Keep a close eye on this situation. John Moores is currently in an ugly divorce battle and he'll likely be looking to unload big contracts anyway, so Brian Giles may not have a choice but to leave San Diego.

Personally, I don't think San Diego can afford to dump big contracts since they moved downtown. Season ticket sales and yearly attendance is currently taking a pretty big hit and those numbers have fallen every year for the past 3 years. I predicted this is exactly what would happen. The newness of the stadium is wearing off and the Padres can't just fill seats with just anyone stepping onto the field. If the Padres cut Giles loose and don't make a big splash (have the Padres ever made a big splash?) this offseason, Moores will take a much bigger hit to the wallet on ticket sales than Giles' option year. People are just not going to hassle with driving downtown to see a crappy Padres team.

They are in the same boat as the Cubs. The team is expected to field a competitive team now. Their days of averaging 30,000 fans a game for a mediocre to bad team are over.

early August...maybe mid-August? somewhere right in there, I guess.

But if he goes to Boston now, he spends the next 3 months away from his family. I don't know a great deal about Giles' family, but it would seem he can't just up and move them all to Boston for the next 3 months. Maybe he doesn't think Boston's going to win it all this year and just making the playoffs isn't enough for him to be away from his family that long.

If you have kids you can't just up and move your family for three months beginning in August without yanking them out of school and what not. Plus, moving them for three months implies making them move again at the end of the three months, so he'd really be obligating them to moving twice. I know if I were in middle or high school, I'd hate bouncing through three different schools over three successive semesters.

Reportedly, one of the tactics they tried to use to get Giles to accept the trade is that they are going to slash their payroll from $74M to $40M next year!

Unless Moores slashes ticket prices by 50% along with his slashing of payroll by 50%, this will not be a popular move among Padres fans.

Is Cuban married and if so how strong is that marriage? :starwars:

Yep, he's married. Although I recall an early interview with Cuban when he was interested in possibly purchasing the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he joked that if he bought that team, he was probably looking at a divorce.

my argument is that he's not spending that much more time away from his family than he would if he stayed in san diego. i don't know, maybe a playoff appearance would conflict with a pta meeting or something?

I understand your argument, I'm just suggesting that Brian Giles might have a different definition of "much more time away" than you do. If he has kids, his wife likely isn't coming to Boston with him. So he's spending the next 3 months away from them (maybe Boston makes another WC trip in there, but whatever). If he stays in SD, he'll be home more, especially since their season will end earlier than Boston's.

My point is that even if he doesn't want to spend more time away from his family and the cost is a chance at a title, that shouldn't mean he has to retire. Maybe he just loves playing baseball and is getting filthy rich doing it, so if he can do that and still spend as much time as possible with his kids, he's happy, even without a WS.
