Brian Giles Claimed On Waivers

By Tim Dierkes [August 6 at 8:56pm CST]

According to Ken Rosenthal, Padres right fielder Brian Giles was claimed on waivers by an unknown team. Giles has about $2.7MM left on his contract this year. He also has a $9MM option for '09 with a $3MM buyout (which logically should be exercised). Giles gets another $2MM if traded. Rosenthal adds that Giles can block deals to the Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Rays, Marlins, Brewers, Pirates, and Nationals.

Rosenthal says the Padres will attempt to make a deal with the claiming team, though it won't be a salary dump. Giles, 37, is hitting .318/.405/.438 away from PETCO this year. Not too many players are capable of a .400 OBP.

The Cubs sound like a logical candidate. Hendry was looking for a bat off the bench at the deadline. The Mets make the most sense however, as hed likely get the starting job in left. Cardinals and D-Backs are other likelies.

Giles was definitely claimed before he got to the Cubs. I'm guessing it was the Braves.

I dont think he'd be off the bench. I'd say he would play about 50 percent of the games left.

According to Cbssportsline.com, it was the Red Sox the put the claim:

Brian Giles, RF SD

News: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Boston Red Sox have claimed Padres OF Brian Giles off waivers. Boston now has 48 hours in which to try to work out a trade with San Diego. If no trade develops, the Padres can retain Giles, whose contract includes Boston among the 10 teams with with he has veto power for a trade.

The mets are effing morons.

If he fell far enough that the BoSox got the claim, we should be able to trump that since we're in the same league, right?

So is Giles going back to San Diego if he doesn't go to Boston I'm confused

Becuase I didn't realize major league GMs were idiots.

That's my understanding, but that also is assuming the Cubs want to claim him, which might not be the case.

i can see Hendry passing, though i wouldn't. he probably sees Edmonds' numbers with the Cubs and feels like they are fine where they are particularly considering Giles can't play CF. Edmonds' numbers with the Cubs are actually better than Giles' numbers this year.

Brian Giles has a workable contract, and isn't overpaid for next year. The Mets, Cardinals, Phillies, and D-Backs could all use him this year. The Braves have a GLARING need for him next year along with some others I don't care to research. And that's NL teams alone. The only teams that we know didn't pass on him were Boston, Tampa, and Anaheim, and that's madness.

correct me if I'm wrong but don't all the AL teams (starting w/the team w/the worst record and then going up) get to consider first whether or not to claim him and then it goes to the NL teams or does it go back and forth? If its the former, he still would have to be considered by all the NL teams before he got to the Cubs, but if it's the latter, then he got pretty far up the chain before he was claimed.

Same league first, then opposing league.

Apparently, its the Red Sox, so if he mad it to the Red Sox, he could have made it to the Cubs. Anyway, the Red Sox are one of the teams he has a right to block a trade to, but I dont see why he would, unless of course he enjoys playing for a go nowhere team.

yes, because the Cubs don't think they need to upgrade in the OF.

I've now read elsewhere(read: BTF), that the league rule is no longer in place, which sounds familiar now that I saw it. Only differnece without the league rule is that the Cubs didn't have a chance in addition to the Angels and Rays.

Playing time would be the reason why he wouldn't accept a trade to Boston. Red Sox has Bay/Ellsbury/Crisp/Drew/Youkilis/Ortiz at 1st/DH, which means he would be basically a bench player. And apparently Giles thinks he still a starter, which I would agree. So it doesn't surprise me if Giles (who can block a trade to Boston, and he has that for a reason) doesn't want to be traded.

I'm wondering if Boston made the claim to block the Rays.

I think that's likely, considering they know he has previously expressed a lack of interest in ever playing there. He went to SD as cheaply as he did (at the time) for a reason, he wanted to be in that area. I don't think he'll change his mind and go to Boston.

With that said, if he does decide to enforce his no trade clause, then SD has to pull him back, right? Then if they try to put him on waivers again, it would be unrevocable. If Boston claimed him again, can he refuse without retiring? SD wouldn't technically be trading him, so his no trade clause would be irrelevant, right? It's probably a moot point, SD wouldn't put him on unrevocable waivers and get nothing for him.

if another team (or several other teams) also claimed him and he either rejects a trade to Boston or a deal w/Boston can't be worked out, can the Pads negotiate with the next team in line that claimed him or is he automatically taken off of waivers?

I'm fairly certain it's either winning team or nobody.
