The best distribution of their current guys is Quentin-Swisher-Griffey in the OF, Dye at 1B, Thome at DH.

Dye has played one career game at 1B, I highly doubt they will tinker with having him move positions in the middle of a pennant race. You are more likely to see Q-Grif-Dye across the OF with Swish at 1st and Thome at DH. Leaving them with 12 million per year Paulie to pinch hit. Yuck.

I wonder if the Sox will have to pay his $4M buy out. Richar and Massett aren't really useful players, and Griffey is bad, but if the Sox have to pay that $4M buy out, then wow its a terrible terrible deal.

I'm pretty sure I heard them say on the radio that the Reds are sending $4MM as well.

What a terrible move for the White Sox. How is this an upgrade over the other players they have?

Considering most WSox fans revel more in the Cubs woes than they do their own teams successes, I think they just want to see Griffy in a Sox uni when he hits the homerun that puts him past Sammy all-time.

Well if this Swisher-for-Street noise has any validity, then maybe the Cubs' angle here is to give the A's some more prospects and get Swisher for themselves.

Evidently the A's aren't going to be making any more trades. Unfortunately though we don't have anyone near the level of Street that we can afford to deal. The Sox are looking for a top bullpen arm. And we know there was bad blood between Eyre and the Sox (and he has a limited NTC). I'd love to get Swisher, but we'd need a 3rd team to get him. With Sherrill and Fuentes apparently staying, suddenly the RP market is thin. Rumors this morning were that Putz might be available.

Anyway, where did the Swisher for Street rumor come from? Did someone pull that out of their butt?

Hes owed roughly 4M for the rest of 2008. I also heard that the Reds would be paying the rest of his 2008 salary, but no one said anything about the $4M buy out that he'll have this offseason.

not shocking, but they just said on ESPN that the sox expect to put him in center. This will be hilarious.

I won't really buy this til I see it. Everyone said the same thing about them stupidly putting Podsednik into CF, and they knew better that he was awful out there.

Griffey is much more awful out there.

What a terrible trade for the White Sox. He can not play CF at this point in his career. He's going to be terrible out there and will probably end up injuring himself. What is Williams thinking with this?

Maybe the Sox think they can wear out opposing defenses with the big shifts they generally put on Griffey and Thome.

Why not flip Griffy to the Cubs for Eyre?

Platoon Griff with Edmonds or Pie later when the roasters expand. The WS get pan help with Eyre.

Griffey can't play CF anymore, and there's no point in platooning one left-handed hitter with another. He really wouldn't serve a purpose on this team.

Maybe the WS have developed some special form of time travel where you can swap people with their past selves, and they're gonna end up with Junior and Thome from 10 years ago.

This has "Rocky Colavito" or, for us Cubs fans, "Bobby Murcer" written all over it. While the Sox gave up absolutely nothing, they really have to catch "lightening in a bottle" for this to be worth the effort. On the other hand, it will probably sell a couple hundred more tickets.

Jim Edmonds has been a good signing and, with this, is looking even better!

He really doesn't serve a purpose on the White Sox, either.

I'm pretty much in agreement with most of the people in here in that this move doesn't make sense at all for the White Sox. Griffey should be hilarious defensively in center, though.

White Sox issued their press release announcing the trade at 2:30 this afternoon, in which he was said to be wearing no. 17.

It's 10:30 now and the online roster lists him as wearing no. 30 with Nick Swisher switching to no. 1. Junior works fast, dude.

Check out that video interview of Kenny Williams on the top of this page. He's like "center field is actually the easiest outfield position to play in terms of staying healthy. It sounds weird, but trust me, you don't have to move around as much in center."

Uhhhh.....

The only thing more hilarious then Junior in CF, is Manny Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano playing RF at the same time..... :D

That you don't cover as much ground in CF?

No, that it's the easiest place to stay healthy in the OF.
