Check out that video interview of Kenny Williams on the top of this page. He's like "center field is actually the easiest outfield position to play in terms of staying healthy. It sounds weird, but trust me, you don't have to move around as much in center."

Uhhhh.....

He's right.

That you don't cover as much ground in CF?

No, that it's the easiest place to stay healthy in the OF.

Well to be fair, every OF position is the easiest place to stay healthy if you let every ball fall for a hit like Griffey.

Ironically enough, Griffey has been his healthiest lately when NOT playing CF.

can you explain that position a bit?

Someone could probably do it better than me, but it has to do with fewer sharp cuts with the routes they take.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Griffey hasn't had alot of joint problems, but rather a lot of hamstring problems. I would think that sharper cuts are harder on the joints, and all-out sprinting in the outfield is harder on the hamstrings. So if you think CF is easier from that point of view, it's still the worst place for Griffey to be playing.

And other than the one weird RF injury, haven't all his leg injuries been on the bases?

I'm pretty sure his calf blew-up in CF against the Cubs.

Maybe i'm completely wrong here, but isn't it more about Jr. being a bad centerfielder and not him being a healthy centerfielder?

Misread your post..thought you were talking about why they moved him from CF in the past, not now.

Speaking of Griffey, he is day to day after leaving the game due to cramping in his leg.

was he playing in the field when he had to leave because of "cramps" today?

I'm not sure if he was actually playing defense at the time of his removal, but he did start in center field today.

Gameday said he was replaced for a pinch-hitter, so he must have either developed the cramping in the dugout or he managed to finish the inning with it. He did have one ball come to him the previous half inning that resulted in a triple.

Is the trade really that bad? It seems that the value of the move isn't as much about getting Griffey as it is about benching Konerko. The team goes from having a 96 OPS+ player in center and a 77 OPS+ player at first to a 104 OPS+ player in center and a 96+ OPS player at first. Konerko's RC/27 this year is a comically low 3.6 - to give people perspective, that's the same level as Paul Bako during the 2003 season.

Compared to the way the trade is being portrayed in the media than it's clear the expectations are too high. But in terms of value it's not a bad trade for the Sox.

The CF dropoff from Swisher to Griffey is a pretty huge dropoff defensively, and Swisher isn't even that good out there. That and I'll eat my hat if Koneko stays healthy and gets less than 120 ABs the rest of the way.
