DeJesus would probably cost a bunch, no?

Giles might be more interesting (as in easier to obtain).

DeJesus crushes righties (.870 OPS) and sucks versus lefties.

Giles on the other hand is remarkedly consistent against both lefties (.833 OPS) and righties (.800 OPS).

And of course Giles numbers are alot better outside of Petco (not that they are bad in the first place). The more I think about it, the more I would like to see Giles in a Cub uniform...

I know the Cubs have a fetish for lefty outfielders... but don't we already have a lefty-hitting right fielder? As well as a lefty-hitting RF backup?

Giles would be nice though

And a lefty-hitting platooning center fielder...

It's actually ridiculous that they are solely focusing on a lefty, when they could be going after a guy like Jason Bay.

I'm starting to think that the Cubs see Edmonds injury as a little more serious than they let on.

Same here. I bet the role we see Edmonds as the rest of the season is as a pinch hitter, he doesn't look to moving too well.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but what the soapdrop do the Cubs need with another LH/RT 'bench' OF, let alone for RF??

Assuming they make a deal for any of those guys, and don't lose anyone on the active roster in the process, this would be the "everyday" bench roster;

C - Blanco (RH)

2B/SS - Fontenot (LH) / Cedeno (RH) / DeRosa (RH)

CF - Edmonds (LH) / Johnson (RH)

RF - Giles-DeJesus-Ibanez (LHs) / DeRosa (RH) / Ward (LH)

I would really like to have Brian Giles.

I prefer DeJesus over Giles for several reasons:

1: He's younger by a decade.

2: He put's up similar numbers.

3: He's versatile.

4: He is under contract through 2011. Which means the Cubs could part with Felix Pie in the deal and still have a CF for the foreseeible future.

It would cost more to acquire DeJesus, but the Cubs IMO, would get more from DeJesus then they would for Giles.

I'm surprised that no teams have been mentioned to be interested in Aubrey Huff. He's suddenly good again (.302/.359/.554 - 22 bombs)

That kind of suprised me as well.

So does this mean hes given up on Ward? because if we do aquire someone, and if Hendry sets his his sights on one of the 3 mentioned, he will get them, the only logical move is to trade o DFA Ward. Im sure he'll find a home somewhere.

I didn't realize Dejesus was actually doing good this year. I would like to get one them.

I'd rank them like this personally in order of preference: 1. Giles 2. DeJesus(very close though due to his contract) 3. Ibanez 4. Gonzalez

I'd prefer DeJesus, which helps in CF beyond this year (I don't see Pie getting a real shot). And you can keep the Johnson platoon going for now - DeJesus is killing RHP this year (.871 OPS). Edmonds can spot start if he's healthy or be a big bat off the bench.

Interesting on Giles - 2 weeks ago, DePo posted on his blog that the Pads aren't really interested in trading him. In part b/c he's performing, in part b/c of his option, and in part b/c they want the young guys to emulate him. So I wonder if he's really an option at this point.

DeJesus would be interesting. He's a decent player. He's not horrible against LHPs, so wouldn't necessarily have to be platooned. He would fit right in with the OBPs on the team, but would not provide nearly the power that Edmonds has shown. However, would give the Cubs another spot in the order without much power. Between DeJesus, Fukudome, Theriot and DeRosa, that's 1/2 the team with minimal power production. Not that it's the worst thing in the world since all 4 get on base over a .360 clip. Probably also would spell the end for Felix Pie.

I'm guessing that this player if we acquired one would replace Ward on the roster...

I hope not

Ward is one of the top PHers out there.

While he's having a down year with the bat, he's really patient which gets him into good counts or at the least gets him on base with a walk.

The thing is, were not looking for a starter to replace the Johnson/Edmonds platoon. Were looking for another bench bat to replace Ward, hopefully a power one, which makes DeJesus out of that equation. Id take Giles or Ibanez over DeJesus, unuless Edmonds is more injured than Lou is letting on.

They might be able to DL Edmonds to extend Ward's stay, but otherwise it comes down to a choice between Edmonds and Ward, and Edmonds is the better choice 10 times out of 10. Even if he gets hurt and is unable to even pinch hit, then he can be DL'ed and Hoffpauir comes in with the exact same skillset as Ward. I wonder what Ward would fetch in trade, even in August?

I would say you have to be looking for bench help and a player that knows his role. It could seriously mess with the chemistry if Dejesus comes in and Edmonds/Reed are ready to go but have no place to play. Everyone seems real comfortable in the clubhouse right about now. If i'm looking for anything it's a bullpen arm so that i can get rid of howry/eyre, the latter because lou refuses to use him.

The who does he replace?

If we were to get either Giles or DeJesus, do we send Fontenot down? I surely hope not as he has been one of the best hitters over the last month. Do we release Edmonds? I hope not, since Edmonds when he's been able to play has still been pretty good for us. Reed Johnson? I still think we need the righty bat. Cedeno? Nope. He's the back-up SS.

The logical answer is Ward would be gone. I like Ward for his role, but his limited ability defensively hampers us. If we replace Ward say with Giles, we have more parts to mix and match in the outfield without sacrificing defense. The only other option would be to keep Ward and go to an 11 man pitching staff for a month until rosters expand.

In fact an outfield of Soriano, Fukudome, and Giles would look really good. With Johnson and Edmonds on the bench, we can pretty much give any outfielder a day off without sacrificing much production. Add to the fact that we could play DeRosa in the OF as well on days that either Fontenot or Cedeno play second, and we have a number of options.

With Ward, he's good for one AB per game.

Probably similar to what we got for Neifi Perez, Todd Walker, and Craig Monroe. If we packaged him with Howry or Eyre, maybe we could get a little something more. I wonder if Detroit would be interested now that their top pinch hitter is now their starting catcher.

I guess there's really no one to replace if not for Ward.
