I do like that we'd be out of Marquis' contract, though. So I wouldn't be completely opposed to the swap, just not excited about it.

I think with the escalation of player salaries, most of Marquis' $9 million for next year might be "movable."

I'm surprised that no teams have been mentioned to be interested in Aubrey Huff. He's suddenly good again (.302/.359/.554 - 22 bombs)

That kind of suprised me as well.

I think all the GM's are equally suprised he is good again. Unlike the Farnsworth good every other year, Huff seems to be good every 3 years.

Hermida is a 24 year old with no platoon split and a .288/.357/.517/.874 line away from Pro Player. I think there's plenty of reason to still believe he can be a good corner OF.

and I would not mind DeJesus at all.

Me neither, That would be someone I really wouldnt mind dealing Pie for!

Exactly, hence why I'm not looking to deal him for utter crap. His contract isn't over market value right now, as he's pitched pretty much to his contract to this point.

If given much of a return at all, though, I'd be willing to trade him.

I would love to have either one of these guys on the team. I've liked the production that Edmonds has given us, but it doesn't seem like he's going to stay healthy the rest of the year. This gives us more options for the lineup and means DeRo shouldn't have to play outfield anymore.

For those more SABR inclined:

Is this year's David DeJesus about what Pie projects to? And would it be worth giving Pie + ? for him?

Pie would be a success if he became DeJesus with the bat. He's significantly better with the glove.

Good point on the defensive difference.

I'm kind of leaning right now toward thinking a Pie + something deal would be worth DeJesus.

Veal?

Giles intangibles make him far too valuable to the Padres to move him

oh and DeJesus excites me, though it would sadly mean the end of Pie with the team

I think that DePo blog posting was more posturing than anything.

yeah I agree, and not to derail the topic, but if Hendry said something like this NSBB would freak out. mostly we can't tell what GMs think from what they say because they all just feed fans crap they think they want to hear.

So you guys think Towers and DePo decided a month or so ago that what their team really needed during this season when they're really crappy, is to set up a blog to lie to their fans? Seriously?

Veal?

I was thinking Ceda, but Veal would work too.

I find Veal more valuable than Ceda - mainly because Veal's a starter - do you agree?

I don't. Veal can't seem to get his walks under control.

Ceda's got his own control issues, but at least he's got nearly unhittable stuff to offset it.

Control is definitely a concern - I'm not utterly sold on Ceda though. He's the type of guy I'd like to ship off while his value is really high.

Looking over Ward's numbers for this year, it's easy to understand why he is the one they want to replace.

While his overall numbers aren't terrible .250/366/433. The BA is a little low, yet is made up by the decent OBA. He's a pinch hitter who does have patience, which is nice, I'm not sure those are great numbers for a player who offers nothing defensively and can be used for one AB per game and often has to burn another player to run after he does get on base.

that's a bizarre misinterpretation

i plainly said all GMs probably say that crap because they think it's what the majority of the meathead fans like to hear, but GMs who are perceived as more forward thinking get much more leeway for their innocuous platitudes

Yeah terrorizing AA hitters probably isn't hurting Ceda's stock any.

Ceda is far more valuable as a prospect and at this point, Veal is starting to look like a potential reliever.

These days, a quality reliever is just as valuable as a starter, especially one with closer potential.

Setting aside that I'm not sure too many Pads fans want to hear that they're not really interested in trading Giles, is there a meaningful difference between lying to fans and telling them "things they want to hear" while knowing such things aren't true?

Well, this year confirmed that he absolutely can't be converted to a starter. Hes done really well in AA back in relief so maybe its remained neutral.
