Hill and Samardzija going tomorrow, I assume?

Should be an interesting day if that's the case.

Andrew Cashner gets the start for Mesa and is making his pro debut.

Logan Watkins is starting in left field...after starting at second base yesterday.

Also, Nelson Perez is starting in center field. That should be interesting, I had gotten the impression he was HUGE and not very good in the field (but with a plus arm).

AZL Athletics Top 1st

Leonardo Gil called out on strikes.

Herbert Hudson singles on a line drive to right fielder Jericho Jones.

With Rashun Dixon batting, Herbert Hudson steals (2) 2nd base.

With Rashun Dixon batting, passed ball by Alvaro Sosa, Herbert Hudson to 3rd.

Rashun Dixon out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Jericho Jones. Herbert Hudson scores.

Franklin Hernandez strikes out swinging.

Cashner's final line: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 GO-1 FO.

John Contreras, Nelson Perez and Sean Hoorelbeke led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with back-to-back-to-back solo home runs.

That was Contreras' 8th HR in 88 at bats and Perez's 8th HR in 100 at bats. They already have more HRs than anyone hit in the AZL in 2005 and 2006. Andrew D'Alesio hit 14 HRs in 2007 and I have to assume that is close to (if not the actual) the record for most home runs in the AZL. They could both easily hit more than 14 home runs this season.

N. Perez's OBP is on the rise after that HBP.

More HBP than BB on the season...2 to 1.

Cashner only pitched the 1 inning then?

Correct.

It has to be hard for young pitchers down there. On the one hand, it would probably be best to not throw him anything in the zone and make him try to earn a walk. On the other hand, they're on the mound for such a short period of time and they obviously want to try and impress.

Of course, their control in and around the zone probably isn't going to be great at that level, anyways.

I can't ever recall a guy going past 100 AB with only one walk, but now he's barely starting his second 100 AB's and he's already gotten his second. (He was at 101 AB, I think.)

May have been intentional? Two outs, man at 2nd, one-run game? His positive IsoD is probably secure for the season now.

Arizona Phil | The Cub Reporter[/url]"]Cashner got the start and threw one inning, allowing one broken-bat opposite field single and one unearned run (the runner who reached base on the single came around to score on a stolen base, a passed ball, and an opposite field sac fly).

Cashner mixed a high-octane heater and biting slider in his one inning of work, striking out the first hitter he faced (looking) on an unhittable slider that crossed the outside corner, and the last hitter in the inning (swinging) on high heat. None of the A's hitters could get around on his pitches. They were behind on every swing.

All in all and probably not too surprisingly, I would say Cashner acquitted himself quite well in his pro debut (to say the least), and he is probably not too long for Fitch Park. He should be in Boise in very short order.

Now that Wood's on the DL might as well send him straight to Chicago.
