The Denver Post reports that Brian Fuentes is likely to be traded before the end of the month, with the Rays, Yankees, Mets, Cardinals and Marlins all "pursuing" him.

"We just have to let this play out," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "There's still a chance we might not do anything." Fuentes figures to be a setup man if he's traded and the move would also give Manny Corpas an opportunity to close again in Colorado.

Why would they want to give Manny Corpas a chance to close again? :-s

My guesses it would have something to do with:

- 95 mph sinking fastball, good hard slider

- 1.17 WHIP, near 2:1 GB to FB, 1 BB/18 Ks in 18 innings since June 1.

- 1.06 WHIP, 2.4:1 GB to FB ratio, near 3:1 BB//K ratio in 2007.

I just like that the title suggests something could happen soon, with soon being the end of the trading deadline, which is about as far away as anybody could reasonably expect a trade to be made.

The Phillies have reportedly entered the running for Rockies' left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Rockies are asking for RHP Carlos Carrasco or catcher Lou Marson, the Phillies' two top prospects. That's way too high of an asking price for Fuentes, who's having a pretty mediocre season. The Phillies have the best bullpen ERA in the majors, but are looking for another lefty to compliment J.C. Romero. We'll keep you updated.

Hopefully not to the Brewers. Fuentes made us look silly last time we faced him.

But I remember a certain evening last fall where the Cubs mounted a huge comback topped by Soriano's game-winning hit that was off Fuentes. Why did he ever throw Hill a slider when his bat is only slider speed?

Tough crowd! Is a 3.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a strikeout per inning really "mediocre?"

No reliever with those numbers will ever be considered "dominant" or "shut down." They're good numbers, but nothing that is that special.

Thing is, 3 or 4 bad outings out of 35 or 40 will blow-up a relivers nos. in some cases.

True, but there wasn't any breakdown like that for Fuentes specifically. Had he said "he has an ERA of XXX if you take out one or two bad appearances" that'd support that Fuentes is top notch as a reliever better than what he did. I don't know if Fuentes's stats are marred more badly by a small number of outlier appearances than the average reliever or not.

12 of 14 ER's from Fuentes have come in 4 games. I think it is safe to say that beside those few games (4 out of 41) he has been downright dominate. After allowing 5 runs on 6/30 he has not allowed a hit or walked a batter in his last 5 outings.

That doesn't seem to be any different than most other decent setup men or closers in the league. Most decent relievers you can point to 4-5 bad outings that account for most of their ERA.

I really want Fuentes in the Cubs pen. He could be a great left handed setup man especially the way Marmol is throwing. Either way we have someone that throws good from either side if it were to happen

Bruce:

Hendry no doubt will inquire about Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes for the pen.

http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/263

I'd love him here for nothing other than the picks, not to even mention his performance.

Not sure what i'd want to give up though, and they are supposed to be looking for alot due to the picks. Maybe they would be high on Colvin for some reason (wishful thinking)?

Maybe the Cubs could sell the Rockies on Colvin being a young, cheaper Brad Hawpe?

The Marlins have reportedly joined the Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, Mets and Yankees in showing interest in Brian Fuentes.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Marlins are now looking at bullpen help as a priority over a veteran catcher. Fuentes would likely be a setup man for Florida and most of the other teams rumored to want him.

According to the Denver Post, the Rockies' asking price for Brian Fuentes has scared teams away.

The newspaper reports that the Rockies asked for Clay Buchholz from the Red Sox, Ian Kennedy from the Yankees, Jon Niese from the Mets and "Wade Hendrickson" from the Rays, although we'll assume that the latter is a misprint meant to be either Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson. While those four (or five) pitchers differ quite a bit in value, they're each a plenty steep price for two months of a reliever.
