Could Gaudin replace Marquis? What's his contract like? Harden injuries worry me and I hope the Dr.s were on the ball and knew every possible detail about his health. Pretty nice trade on paper.

I wish the 4, Murton, Gally, CPatt and Donaldson the best and as long as their interests don't conflict with mine that is. Have fun in Northern Cal Peroria39 and thanks for posting here!

This year is Gaudin's first year of arbi. Hes signed for 1.775M. Hes under our control for 2.5 years. Unfortunately I don't see the Cubs getting rid of Marquis.

Thanks nilo. After today, anything can be possible!

Even if Harden isn't 100% for the next couple years, this is a good trade.

As long as he is healthy for 4 more months

Even if he's on the field as little as Nomar was, it's still a good move. It gives the Cubs a legit chance just to have him in their control. Harden could start 20 more times and throw 20 shutouts and it doesn't guarantee anything. This is a good deal. The Cubs gave up some talent, but nobody that had a clear cut spot in the near future.

I've wanted Harden more than Sabathia from the start for a few reasons. The first is that it would've probably taken way more to get Sabathia away from Cleveland. And the second is that Sabathia is essentially a rental this year (unless the Cubs would've been willing to throw a MONSTER deal his way after this year.) Harden is a Cub until at least the end of 2009.

Solid move.

I think it is a great great trade. We didn't even lose Vitters unless there is a PTBNL that has not been announced.

True. We definitely have plenty of guys who could take his spot in Marshall, Lieber, Gaudin and eventually Hill. Although, in the press conference, Hendry praised Marquis for pitching a lot of innings. If they could get rid of Marquis in a deal for Burnett, that would be amazing. Also, don't forget that Dempster is a FA after this year so we will have to fill that hole as well. We definitely have enough arms to do so, but GMs can never have enough arms to be happy.

oh my ---SOAPDROPPING--- god!!!

ummm...this is like christmas morning...this is amazing

i am going out and buying some beer tonight baby!!!

WOWOOWOOWOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO

I feel a little sad that you have to buy beer for an occasion. Or maybe I am a little sad for me that I always have some on hand...nope definitely the first feeling.

what?!?

so, you are saying that i should always have some on hand then?

Yes, a quality 6 pack is always nice to have.

Outstanding. For all of the knocks (and rightfully so at times) Hendry gets, we know he gets a deal done when the team is in contention and it almost always puts us in a better position to win without hurting us long-term. He and Beane really seem to work well together.

As has been said it's a good deal for both teams. I would have thought Oakland could have maybe gotten more in return, but they do have 3 pieces that are Major League ready. Gallagher is the only one that may really hurt, but that's what you have to give to get such a high reward possibly.

Agreed. He certainly has plenty of philosophical flaws (which he may have come around on, actually), but he has put together 3 blockbuster deals over the last 6 years when his team was in serious contention. Prior to his tenure as GM, I can't really remember the Cubs being anywhere near as aggressive.

I really think Marquis is getting Izturis-ed by the end of the month. Gaudin keeps us at 6 starters, and that's not including Lieber, Hart, or Hill. I think Jim giving Marquis credit was his way of talking him up. Gallagher was also untouchable earlier this season IIRC.

And I'll add on to the best of wishes to Sean, if you could pass them on Mr. Gallagher.

This trade should work out best for Sean, Matt, and Eric, and it works out well for the Cubs. I love it.

The fact that the Brewers got Sabathia still scares me.

But it's a good scared. This is fun. This is an arms race (no pun intended) that leaves the rest of the league in the dust if done right.

I got so sick of seeing the National League teams scrap together the hope for 90-wins and assume it was enough, while the AL teams stockpiled talent. Now the Cubs and Brewers are doing the same thing, and it's exciting.

Why did you have to write that? I hope George moves in with you after he leaves the White house now.

I was fixing to post the official apologize to Hendry thread

This is the best trade Jim Hendry has ever made.

Isn't it a little early for that? On paper it's a good trade, but Harden could get hurt tomorrow. Or on August 1, one day after the trade deadline.

Process not outcome.
