Holy crap I just saw this like 10 minutes ago (thank you Cubbies75 facebook status). I cannot sit still right now. Just an awesome deal if he stays healthy.

And he better start Friday. I just got a call from a friend earlier in the day inviting me to the game. Holy crap I am pumped.

Great job Hendry!!!

I wonder if this trade happens if CC doesn't get moved. Now the Cubs will beat the Brewers and have a better chance at winning the WS. So CC, barring injuries to Harden, might have pushed Hendry and helped the Cubs all the more.

Now we need to pick up Ozuna: he hits CC well.

Score is reporting Cubs were inquiring about Bedard for Gallager, Murton, Patterson, and Pie. No formal offer had been made, though, it was simply a discussion.

This is the MUCH better deal.

I have no idea what number Harden will wear, but I wanted a jersey in my sig.

He wore 40 with Oakland, I assume he'd keep it.

Yeah, they wouldn't let you use that number, so maybe. What number does Larry go to then?

Oh yeah, Larry. Hmm.

I'm happy that Murton is free. It sucks to lose Gallagher but you can't complain. This is gonna be one hell of a second half.

I just peed a little.

I really really really wanted to see Gallagher stay and be successful, but they were bouncing him back to the bullpen, so this is probably best for his career.

Murton was ignored and neglected and probably would go back to AAA then Soriano returns, EPatt is somewhat of a joke, and Donaldson is... well... who needs him when you have Soto?

Gallagher was the only one who would really contribute this year, and quite frankly, Harden vs. Gallagher is an easy choice.

The players could turn out well for Oakland, but they really had no place or future in this organization. So pretty much this is a steal.

Here's hoping Harden stays healthy enough to dominate.

Man... this rotation is sick, and could be better if Hill turns it around.

I'm so hyped. This is f-bombing rad!

Is it just me, but somehow I figure this deal has been in the works, but that Jim was trying to do it without Gallagher. He might have been offering Marshall instead. After Sabathia went to the Brewers, Hendry stepped up to include Gallagher if the A's would give up Gaudin as well. I may be off on that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it went.

Sounds very logical.

Man, if we would have gotten this deal done without Gallagher that would have been ridiculous. I think Beane is smart enough not to have done that deal though.

Hendry:

"The deal isn't getting made without Gallagher in it. We did kick around a lot of names in the other spots, but I think the deal had a strong chance to get done once Sean was included. I can't speak for Billy Beane, but I don't think he was going down this path in the end without Sean. And it wasn't a guy I wanted to put in or did in the beginning"

Hendry's press confererence on espnews

You got to love Jim bringing up his obsession with LH bats during the Harden press conference.

Mind giving some notes for those of us who don't have ESPNews?

He praised Beane's professionalism and honesty in negotiations.

Said he asked about Harden maybe 6 weeks ago, but things got a little more serious 10 days ago.

He's got a pretty big smile.

Gives Murton and Patterson a chance to get more playing time, and thinks Sean can be a really good starter for them right away.

He's still in the mode he's always in which is constantly looking to improve the team (this seems to be a standard response for him, so I wouldn't take it as he's about to make another move or anything).

Was there any mention of Hendry pursuing other deals? We sure have plenty of chips left

i'm not sure how much more the cubs need. when healthy, the lineup is:

LF soriano

RF fukudome

1B lee

3B ARam

C Soto

2B derosa

CF edmonds/johnson

ss theriot

bench:

ward

johnson/edmonds

fontenot

blanco

cedeno

rotation:

zambrano

harden

lilly

dempster

marquis

bullpen:

gaudin

lieber

wuertz

marmol

wood

howry

eyre

with the possibility that marshall or hill replaces marquis in the rotation, or one of the bullpen arms if someone is on the DL. i don't see the cubs upgrading at SS right now, and CF has been fine with edmonds and johnson - plus possibly pie as a defensive replacement in september. i guess if some good LOOGY guys hit the market i could see hendry dabbling for one, but aside from that, the cubs don't need much.

I'll miss SG and I wish him well. He's a good kid with a real future. Matt Murton? Odios, never did anything to warrant some of the love he got. E-patt? Meh, nothing to be upset about there. Lastly, Donaldson was basically traded for Gaudin, I LOVE that.

Kudos, JH! I'm going to have a beer and enjoy the evening and watch the Cubs whip the Reds.

Really happy we are in a "win now" mode and going for the front of the rotation starter instead of playing it safe with lesser pitchers. Obviously some risk here with injuries (and losing a young talent in Gallagher) but the potential upside is just so great with the 1-2 punch in the playoffs. We are so close this year and I applaud Hendry for really going for it while we have a shot of becoming a very dangerous team.

What a great day to be a Cub fan!

Rothschild? He can't change his uniform number for an ace pitcher?

Murton will be good for a small ball team because most every time he throws down a swinging bunt anyway.

Larry's on his 3rd uni number as the Cubs PC (47, 41, 40). I don't think he'll have a problem giving up No. 40 for Harden.
