NBC Nightly News sometimes has a segment called "The Fleecing of America".

Pittsburgh (Ramirez/2003 deals) and Oakland (Harden/Guadin) fans are going to want Hendry featured in "The Fleecing of MLB"! :good:

This trade wasn't as big of a steal as Aram was. Oakland actually got some somewhat serviceable talent. Pittsburgh got dog crap on a stick.

I like it. It's a calculated risk, but a "this year" kind of risk, the kind you have to take. I just can't believe it happened now rather than nearer the deadline.

As for concerns about Harden's health: I'm a little comforted by the fact that Hendry and Beane have dealt before, and we've been OK. I'm sure every GM would swindle his own mother if given the chance, but since these two have been frequent trading partners, I'd like to think there's nothing more than meets the eye here.

Great job, Jim! Go get him, Rich! Sean, man, sad to see you go.

This is exactly who i wanted, even more than CC.

Really? Injury free, Cy Young lefty over an injury prone, but good pitcher in Harden?

Injury history is really the only way Sabathia is better than Harden.

This is awesome. I'll miss Gallagher; I won't miss Murton, but that's because I knew he had no chance in Chicago. Put a Murton on 'em in Oakland, Matty. Patterson was also a man without a spot, and Donaldson seems to be overtaken at C by this Wellington cat. All the players can help Oakland, but Chicago lost nothing crucial to them today. Reminds me of the Lakers trading for Gasol this past season.

Pretty crazy how the game works, on a personal level. Yes, Rich Harden appears to be a very nice upgrade for this team and bolsters their chances for a historic World Series run, and the middle-of-the-day, hope-you-enjoyed-your-time-in-the-spotlight-Melvin timing. Its very exciting.

But don't forget how it could affect other aspects, too. Everyone here was extremely lucky to have a poster like Mr. Gallagher, and this community is (likely) losing a valuable and significant contributor eventually after everything settles down. I hope I am not assuming too much, but it happens. This was a situation that we, as fans, may have to wait years (used to it) to have such a similar opportunity to enjoy, so I want to thank you, Mr. Gallagher, for your generous sharing, and remind you of the class act son that you raised (who can count an army of Cubs fans along with the new A's followers who will be supporting and cheering on his career).

One day Sean is just living the life of a ball player, messing around with teammates eating bugs on bets to entertain. I am sure he was well-liked in the clubhouse, as were the other guys. I'm happy for Murton, he could thrive in this new situation, eventhough I'm admittedly uninformed of the Oakland outfield. I hope no spots are set in stone, he earns one and never looks back, then turns it into a respectable contract from someone when it comes up.

This is a trade that I truly hope both sides ends up being overly satisfied with.

Good post.

I'll miss Sean a great deal.

I remember Gaudin's slider on a list of the best pitches in baseball a few years ago and I love the fact that we got him in the deal along with Harden. I hope Jim gets Marquis out of the rotation as soon as he can.

I know I'm late to the party, but what an incredible trade. To acquire a pitcher with that talent, and have the best player you deal with Sean Gallagher, is simply amazing. Great job, Jimbo!

Could Gaudin replace Marquis? What's his contract like? Harden injuries worry me and I hope the Dr.s were on the ball and knew every possible detail about his health. Pretty nice trade on paper.

I wish the 4, Murton, Gally, CPatt and Donaldson the best and as long as their interests don't conflict with mine that is. Have fun in Northern Cal Peroria39 and thanks for posting here!

Gaudin is going to be the underappreciated part of this trade similarly like Murton was in the Nomar trade.

Years ago Hendry might have overpayed just for him and having him as a "toss in" is wonderful.

This year is Gaudin's first year of arbi. Hes signed for 1.775M. Hes under our control for 2.5 years. Unfortunately I don't see the Cubs getting rid of Marquis.
