Hopefully everything turns out ok for Aramis and whatever family matter he has turns for the better over the next few days.

This is the wrong ballpark to be missing another player, but the Cubs will survive. They need to do a little gambling defensively now.

Tonight, it should be Murton, Edmonds, Fukudome across the outfield

DeRosa, Theriot, Cedeno, Lee across the infield

for the next 2 games I would say to do Ward, Edmonds, Fukudome across the outfield

with DeRosa, Theriot, Fontenot, and Lee across the infield.

Doesn't Cedeno still have his insane reverse splits? I'd play him all 4 games (or however long ARam is out). I still wish they'd put the real SS at SS when he's in the game and let Theriot play 2B.

Yes, but there honestly isn't really anyone else to put at 2B tonight, and since I know Lou will put Cedeno there I just stuck him in that slot. Honestly, Fontenot or Patterson would probably be better options against a finesse left-hander with a good breaking ball like Zito than Cedeno, but hopefully Cedeno can lay off. But yes, Cedeno has an .811 OPS against right-handers and a .602 against left-handers so far this year.

I put Fontenot in that slot for the other 2 days because I believe he is a better hitter than Cedeno is overall. He's been a tick better than Cedeno against right-handers this year, and he's been a lot better than Cedeno in both May and June so far. If they put Cedeno at SS and Theriot at 2nd, I might feel a little differently since that upgrades the defense aspect of Cedeno. But if I'm choosing between one of Cedeno or Fontenot at 2nd, I think Fontenot has to be the guy right now, and I'm curious to why you would put Cedeno out there instead.

b/c I'd put him at SS

Ok, but that option seems to be clearly out the window. Would you still play Cedeno at 2nd until Aramis comes back? Just asking since your first post seems to indicate that you know that they won't put him at SS, but that you want him to play anyway.

Well, I didn't mean to imply that, though I can see how it's read that way. I meant I'd play him at SS as long as ARam is out and play Theriot at 2B. If they're both on the field, there's no reason not to play Cedeno at SS. And if you're going to put 3 of DeRosa, Cedeno, Theriot, and Fontenot on the field, I think I'd take the first 3. Although, with DeRosa's struggles in June, I might put Cedeno at 3B and Fontenot at 2B (again, not really going to happen).

I think I'd still play Cedeno even at 2B. I don't think the difference between he and Fontenot is that great, though I think Fontenot is a good guy to have on the bench. And I think Cedeno has enough upside, that he needs to be getting more ABs.

I wonder if the cubs being on sunday night baseball again last night cost them an extra day in terms of ramirez returning, since he probably could have left sunday late afternoon - evening otherwise.

Seriously, this is NOT what I needed to hear today. I wonder if whatever it is, he had it on his mind this past weekend because he sure struggled. Hope he can get it taken care of, and that it turns out OK and he can come back hot.

The outfield I want to see is Patterson/Fukudome/DeRosa.

The offense will take a hit, but that's the best outfield we can throw out there to get as many fly balls as possible.

They just mentioned on the radio that there's speculation about why he's left the team. But they didn't say what the problem was.

Anyone know???

I don't think so because he requested 4 days, but the Cubs only granted him 3. So, the Sunday night game probably cost Aramis that extra evening with his family. But, I don't think it costed him any extra lost time with the Cubs.

I'd expect the Cubs to place him on the bereavement list and call up a player for the next three days.

Are there specific criteria that need to be met to be able to put a guy on the bereavement list?

Posted
The bereavement list may be used when a player finds it necessary to leave the team to attend to a serious illness or death in his (or his spouse's) immediate family. A player placed on the bereavement list must miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games. The team can use another player from its 40-man roster to replace a player on the bereavement list.
Sounds like he'd qualify based on the time frame, but without specific details being announced it's hard to know whether his reason for leaving would qualify. My guess is that it would, because I don't think the Cubs would have allowed him to leave for a lesser reason given the current injury problems with other players.

Isnt Reed Johnson getting activated Wednesday anyway? Someones going to Iowa then anyway, so its kind of silly to bring someone up for 2 games, of which they may or may not see any action.

I don't think it's silly to bring someone up for two days. Why go with a short bench? You never know when you'll need an extra bat or fielder. And being up for only a couple days shouldn't stunt a younger players development.

I would agree to bring somebody up for 2-3 days (I thought Reed got back on Thursday, but I may be wrong on that) but it doesn't look like they're going to according to Cubs.com:

The club has not placed Ramirez on the bereavement list and he is expected back for Thursday's finale against the Giants.

Right. They'd be foolish not to take someone from Iowa if they could. You never know when a 19-inning game might magically appear.

Still no word on why he left?????

The radio has made refernces to "rumors" but, responsibly, won't share the rumors.

I'm guessing the reason is "none of the fans' business"

Matt Thornton was on the Score670 today and he was saying how everyone in the Sox dugout was just surprised to see Aramis struggling in the series. He mentioned how they talked about how Aramis just didn't look ready to play. I guess they knew something was up with him because they couldn't believe that they would just be able to shut him down offensively.

ESPN 1000 reported A-Ram left the team to be with his wife who is giving birth to their first child. 8-)
That certainly doesn't qualify as "bereavement" in the usual sense of the word, but it still should be a justifiable reason to replace him on the roster while he's gone. Maybe change the name from bereavement list to family leave list.
