We need several hitters that can change the outcome of a game, I know the Cubs have been trying but thus far I can't remember any hitter coming out of the cuba minor leagues that could be called an impact hitter. latest attempts are

Vitters, Colvin, Dope, Harvey. Nice try.

Soto should jump out. They've obviously done a poor job of developing position players since the Dallas Green era. They should go for the best player avail. (assuming signable for dollar on the muscle) regardless of position.

We've got some usefulness out of our system. Theriot gets overlooked as a hitter to come from our system, and I'd say he's done a good job. Obviously Soto. Fontenot has been a quality bench player, and Hoffpauir looks to have at least a future PH/spot start role.

We still have Pie Patterson and Murton waiting in Triple A, as well as a few others down the line. We might not have many top prospects, but we have some decent players come from our system.

From Grace to Soto......You would think by luck alone we would have better hitters....It's interesting to me that some organization develop hitters and some cannot...We have been able to develop decent pitchers but something is lacking on how we draft and or develop these hitters.

I'm not sure if we just fall in love with "tool" guys that cannot make contact. Or if our hitting instructers just cannot teach this concept...

Nothing against Vitters but I just don't understand why we would draft HS players in the first couple of rounds...It would just make sense to me that if you are going to spend 2 million bucks on a signing bonus why not have a better sample size...Three years of college and playing against better competition just seems to make sense...

I understand that some players project to have higher ceilings in HS but the competition just isn't there.

Also, because college players are older and more developed, in theory that could start off in high A ball as opposed to rookie league...Meaning they are closer to the Major leagues...Why not help the Cubs in 3 years as opposed to six....

The Cubs haven't been good at developing collegiate hitters either. There is something to be said that when a kid goes to college, the level of competition is the same when he's 18 and when he is 21. This can be costly espec. for kids that aren't in Elite conferences as far as their development.

That same kid going thru the minors (if he has everything to succeed mentally and physically) would progress further and quicker going thru the minors compared to College.

If he's overly aggressive or passive in HS, he will likely be that in College, and if he gets drafted, he'll prob. be like that in the minors with marginal improvements w/his approach likely negated by improved command of AA/AAA pitchers.

I think extra value placed on collegiate hitters compared to their overall tools simply b/c they went to college is overrated.

As far as catchers and pitchers, the increase in competition can expose catchers in a far greater manner than HS hitters and additional usage of pitchers can give a better idea of risk of injury.

That production looks like absolute crap compared to every organization except the Giants. I mean come on. Oh wow, Fontenot, Hoffpauir, Murton, Pie, come on.

I'm just saying we're getting at least usable parts from our minors, which is really what you need to build a quality team for a decent price. Sure, we have to add some high price players, but having cheap bench players/role players is a big key, and we have at least 2 starters (Soto and Theriot) and quite a few role players (Hoffpauir, Patterson, Fontenot, Cedeno)

I understand what you are saying but Fontenot and Murton werent brought up in our system, they came over in trades.

Fearless prediction- the next Cubs impact hitter coming from the minors will be Steve Clevenger. Maybe not 30 HR power, but .300 type with 20 HR potential.

What exactly makes you think that a 22 year old in A ball (who couldn't hit in AA) with a .363 SLG (that's right, it's lower than his OBP) has 20 HR potential?

He's got 4 HRs in 551 ABs over the past 2 seasons.

Why lump Vitters in with Harvey and Dope? Vitters is batting three-thirty or three-forty something right now.

He's 18 hitting over .300 in short season ball...give him a break.

Too bad we didn't sign Alexi Ramirez from the cuba minor leagues, he is tearing it up. There has to be some more good Cubans down there??!!?1

The post was written in early June, when Vitters had yet to do anything, I believe.

haha so you think alexei ramirez is an impact hitter but you say nobody cares about matt wieters, who's probably the #2 prospect in baseball and is hitting .350 with an OPS of 1.050 in the minors? hilarious.

the guy called the cubs minor leagues the cuba minor leagues and he said nobody cares about matt wieters as in "No one here cares about matt wieters" because he's not in our system and the guy we ended up with is hitting .330

Shouldn't Rick Porcello be the player you whine about passing on? Our farm system is seriously lacking when it comes to high end rotational prospects. I'll trust the scouting reports that stated Vitters was the best pure hitter available. But even if both Vitters and Wieters live up to their upsides they don't equal the value of a true ace with four potential plus pitches.

Or Jarrod Parker. Hell maybe even the two Giants guys. That said, I am very happy with Vitters now. Then I preferred both Wieters and Porcello.
