Reliever Chad Fox injured his right elbow while playing catch with Scott Eyre before Thursday's game and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Fox's inflamed ulnar nerve could take anywhere from a week to a couple of months to heal. The Cubs will bring up Iowa right-hander Jose Ascanio, who was acquired from Atlanta last winter in the Will Ohman trade.

hopefully this marks the end of the second chad fox era in chicago

Does this mean that Eyre finally did something good for us?

Other then the fact that in his last 26 2/3 innings pitched for the Cubs, he has a 0.67 ERA, I guess you could say he finally did something good :D

I do feel bad for Fox, but teams cannot afford to tiptoe around the fragility of his arm considering his age and ability level.

I just don't understand what Chad Fox was here for. They didn't trust him to throw an inning in a close game unless the bullpen was tired. He couldn't really work on consecutive days. He wasn't really the long man, despite high pitch counts in his outings. Hopefully they have the faith to bring in Ascanio a little more often then they did Fox.

Cripes, we're going to have to encase that guy in bubble wrap at the rate things are going. A stiff breeze might snap his spine in two.

But hey, Ascanio's up. Sweet! For those of you wondering about him, here are his numbers in AAA. He should be a step up over Fox, that's for sure.

I hope Ascanio comes in and simply is so good or the Cubs, to a point that they can't afford to send him down again. I'm not asking for Carlos Marmol Part 2, I'm asking for a hybrid of Weurtz/Marmol. If he does, then the Cubs bullpen will simply be such a weapon, that teams will literally cry themsevles to sleep.

Sucks that an injury forced the move, but it was the right one a long time ago. Now, Lou just has to actually put Ascaino in a game on a consistent basis. I feel bad for Fox, and I hope he catches on with another team, but I hope we've seen the last of him in a Cub uniform.

Can someone provide a quick scouting report on Ascanio for those of us who don't know much about him? Thanks.

lol, they just showed a report on SportsNite about how happy he was to be up here again.

Yeah, and I started to like the guy after that piece. Hope he stays in the sport somehow, but he might be better off calling it a career.

Power reliever, fastball/slider, like Marmol and Wuertz.

When is the last time the Cubs had a sidearm reliever?

Clay Rapada circa 2007. Dude faced 1 batter and got him out. Does that count :)

Speaking of that dude he is doing pretty well so far for the Tigers. Leyland brought him in to face a righty and then after he walked the batter he got yanked. I scratched my head at that usage of the lefty sidearmer in that instance.

Anyway good news about Ascanio. I was really interested to see what he was going to do in AAA this year and so far im pleased with his numbers. Now i get to actually see his stuff.

It was the least the Cubs could do after Dusty Baker sawed his arm off at the elbow. This was one of those "Jim Hendry does right by the player" type moves.

Now, let's hope the goodwill is over. He got in a few games, got a nice applause, got a TV story. Now, we should probably pick, you know, the best players to fill out the roster.
