It definitely is an interesting string of friends...Zell is part owner of the Sox with Reinsdorf, Reinsdorf is buddies with Selig and Selig is buddies with Canning.

Also, a 650M payment is due Dec 4th, so I'm guessing that is going to be a significant date.

Yeah, but I seriously doubt that friendship will play a role in the sell of the franchise. If Canning doesn't outbid Cuban, then I promise people Zell will take Cuban's offer. Owners like Cuban is good for baseball, because they will always try to put the best product on the field.

I've decided to be angry at anyone who makes a movie that shows an educator preying on children. See, even though those are despicable people, we teachers have to stick together. We can't let anyone think that a teacher would cause a student harm.

That is a hideous comparison. I don't remember anyone ever painting educators with a broad brush like some people do the military.

Maybe not on a broader scale, but certainly w/in communities it can happen. In my hometown, a teacher was busted several years ago for illicit affairs w/ a couple students....ALL teachers are suspect in the eyes of parents there, and I don't see it going away anytime soon.

But it's the same thing. If the story was completely false, then sure be angry that someone used something false to disparage a group of people. On the other hand, if the incidents in Redacted are true, (and I'll be honest and say I have no idea as I haven't seen it, nor do I want to)then what's the uproar. It exposed the rougue activities of a few men. I'd hope that most in our society will distinguish between the two, just as when you read almost daily of a teacher who acted inappropriately, that you realize that is not indicative of the whole.

But when the military rallies around those exposing wrong doings rather than condemning them as well, I have my questions as to whether they are just pissed that someone is attacking one of their own, whether that person deserved it or not.

We often see the same kind of behavior in other realms of law enforcement ie "the blue wall of silence" when it come to police officers. My feeling is if the movie is saying this is indicative of all soldiers, then there is reason to be angry. On the other hand if it is just bringing to light injustices, then why is it so reprehensible?

Watch the movie and then decide what sort of brush is used.

Second tip: the industry is dying, the job market is hideous, salaries are plummeting and you should want to be anything but a sports journalist.

I can't figure out which is more sad -- a teacher who preys on children or the mainstream public in that town who are apparently unable to take cases on an individual basis. Both will lead to more unjustified victimization of the innocent.

If you guys want to discuss the movie crap & rape and such, there's a social (or rants) forum for that. Personally, I want to discuss Cuban here. I understand Jerhico brought the movie into this discussion and for him it is relevant to this topic. But the larger discussion about the movie does not belong here.

btw - I hate splitting threads on this version of the software. Please don't make me do it. It's far easier to just stop talking about the movie.

does Jehrico know someone in the film or something? this seems to be hitting close to home for him

No. The film attempts to impress upon the viewers that those sort of things are common in Iraq, when they're not. Despite the fact you end up with 135,000 people over there, probably 100,000 of them under 25, and you tell them they can't have sex for a year, I bet you'd still find that the percentage of rapists over there are far, far below than what you'd find in any other city with a similar population in the US. I've been shot at and blown up on more than a couple of occasions myself, and I've lost several close friends over there. Anyone who attempts to marginalize what they died for by making the actions of a very, very, very small percentage seem like the norm deserves whatever bit of derision they get. That movie wasn't trying to bring light to a handful of criminal individuals, it was a propaganda piece that slanted us all. I can't believe there are some people on this board who don't get that, I expected more.

Even if you forget my background and what I do, it was a waste of time to begin with. There are far more pressing issues that would have done more for society than choosing this one. This was a political piece. Anyone who thinks redacted has anything to do with correcting a wrong is completely and utterly delusional.

And no, I don't know anyone in the film. I take exception to the way the movie attempted to portray the entire military, and subsequently, I take exception to the producers of the film as well. All of that reinforces why I completely and absolutely loathe Cuban and hope he doesn't have anything to do with the Cubs. I love the Cubs, but I will not attend another game, buy another jersey, or do anything that would put a penny in his pockets if he becomes the owner.

An extremely wide brush. Which is why the movie bombed and our potential future owner lost alot of money on it.

But the original post was...

Maybe you should be angrier at the rapist soldiers than the men who made a movie about the rapist soldiers. Maybe you are, I don't know.

and you called someone a moron for that. The bottom line is that some men did commit rape, Mark Cuban did not. You have real issues if you side with rapists over a man who made a movie about rapists.

I watched "Breach" a couple of months ago, and now I assume that all high ranking CIA employees are traitors...?

..........

To the topic at hand, I hope so badly that Mark Cuban gets the winning bid. I will buy double the amount of jerseys, hats, and tickets than I normally would if he does, but I won't lose sleep if he doesn't buy them. There are worse things to worry about. Like rapes.

You're a pathetic idiot.

I don't see a problem with the original statement??

Jehrico's a soldier. He can and should have a problem with that statement.

Unless you totally failed to read any of these posts correctly, I'm not sure how you came about making this statement.

I'm opening this thread back up. Drop the movie topic. If you want to discuss it, start a new thread in an appropriate location. Don't make us lock it for good.

I'm not saying it will play a role, but just that the string is interesting. Zell seems like the guy when faced with the alternatives of doing whats best for his friends or whats best for himself to spout out a few expletives and prepare to receive a few less Christmas (or Hannukah) cards in the mail.

Also, one thing thats annoying me is that people keep on talking about what if Cuban blows the Canning group out of the water. Cuban is a smart business man, hes not going to ridiculously overpay for the Cubs.

Not ridiculously, but significantly? Possibly, if he thinks the ROI is good enough to cover it, and if he thinks that's what it'll take to get a deal done.

What's ROI, rate of insanity?

Hehe, return on investment.

Banedon, I think your second line might be the most important...Cuban probably knows that he will have to go above and beyond to get the deal done.

Are we sure he'd spend a ton on payroll? I know that's why most Cubs fans are excited about him, but I'm just wondering if he'd really boost our payroll significantly. I'd love for him to come in and spend $175 million a year, but I don't know how feasible that is.

Just a minor, unfounded worry at this point.

I don't think payroll is a problem. But I do believe Cuban would bring the organization into the 21st century. I am no basketball fan, but I recall reading a couple of years ago about some of the pioneering performance stats he used in Dallas.

Some possible movement:

Trib[/url]"]More than a year after Tribune Co. announced it would sell the Chicago Cubs, the highly anticipated sale is expected to begin in earnest this week, with the official offering going to Major League Baseball, according to sources close to the process.

After reviewing the confidential financial memorandum, the league is expected to deliver it to six groups of potential buyers, kicking off what is expected to be torrid bidding in which the price could approach a record $1 billion.

The books had not gone out as of Tuesday, according to a source close to the situation. A Tribune Co. spokesman would not comment

.................

The team sale has been delayed because Tribune Co. is trying to sell historic Wrigley Field separately to the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. Those negotiations are continuing, and the authority's board will get a status report Wednesday, said former Gov. James Thompson, chairman of the state/city agency that owns and operates U.S. Cellular Field.

Among the financing options being discussed, according to a source close to the negotiations, is the sale of equity seat rights, an idea put forward by Chicago entrepreneur Lou Weisbach. The concept involves the sale of seats to fans for a fixed annual price for the duration of a long-term contract.

The concept differs from personal seat licenses, which Thompson has said is not being considered. Buying such a license entitles a fan to first dibs on season tickets for a particular seat.

Zell announced last month that Tribune Co. would proceed with the sale, putting forward a book that offers the team two ways, with and without the ballpark.

While Zell would like to sell the team by August, sources said he is not committed to doing a deal by then.

I just hope we can get through the majority of the paperwork and processes to have this thing completed by Christmas.

I posted it earlier, but theres $650M due on December 4th. I think thats the likely date everyone will be shooting for.

Someone help me understand why a group would want the Cubs and not Wrigley.

Try not to use, "they can afford the Cubs but not Wrigley", because that would seem like nonsense.

It's a horrible horrible bluff being used by Zell.
