This was a move of pure genius.

Results-oriented thinking is tempting, but the move was right or wrong regardless of Marquis' performance tonight.

i was thinking it was wrong before the results were in. and i was right.

i could totally see lou doing something like this in the playoffs, starting a bad pitcher over hill because the opposing team had one good game against hill or something.

Playoffs?

What about results-oriented thinking, as in, the usual result of Marquis pitching is bad.

Let's see here...a guy is strugglign big time with his comman, so you skip his start and bench him for 9 days. Then he walks 4 guys in the first innings? I can't believe it! Who would have guessed?

They've taken their second best starter, told him he was doing everything wrong following a rough ST and wild but effective start to the season, tried to redo his mechanics, put him in the bullpen, put him back in the rotation, skipped a start, and then pulled him in the first inning. He had a sub-4.00 ERA and has only struggled with command. Now he'll be sent to Iowa.

Just brilliant managing and coaching right there. Piniella and Rothschild really work miracles.

I said it in the game thread, and I'll say it here.

I look for Hill to be sent to Iowa and Gallagher to be recalled.

Which would be outstanding since Lieber's gonna be the guy to the rotation, that way the 2 Seans can rot in the pen and never pitch. Chad Fox's arm might burn out even faster this way.

maybe I am the only one around here who is seriously disappointed in Hill, but he has stunk this year. walking as many people as he has is ridiculous

I'm disappointed in Rich's performance. I'm more disappointed in the way he's been handled by the incompetent boobs that run the show.

I'm disappointed the pitcher with the third-best ERA in our rotation is being pointlessly jerked around because it isn't aesthetic enough for some.

granted his ERA has been nice, his WHIP has been north of 1.40. mechanics, being jerked around, being taunted by the water boy, i dont care, he walks more people then I can handle watching. I thought last year was his turning point, but my god i want to strangle him when he starts walking people

That .217 BABIP and 79.4 LOB% wasn't likely to continue though. If his strikeout rate had gone up even when that walk rate skyrocketed, it would have been better (and the LOB% would be more reasonable). Unfortunately, his strikeout rate has also been down so far this year.

All of which are 19 innings worth of stats, which is to say they are pretty much meaningless in terms of projecting him from here on out.

Hill has always struggled with walks

Wait... so you're saying it's the Cubs fault that he walked 4 of the 6 guys he faced tonight?

I think he is partially saying that, yes.

No I'm not, but it certainly could have contributed to his struggle. Are you telling me that giving a guy who is suffering from control problems 9 days off is a good way to remedy control problems? Hill is struggling, I'm not saying he's not, but they ar handlingim poorly and not helping. They need to be doing everything possible to help him re-gain his 2007 form, and giving him 9 days off does not do that. He needs to be starting every 5th day, whether its here or in Iowa.
