So is this where we will post our draft reactions, or are we going to have a gameday thread deal?

I'm getting my house painted so I am going to need something to do while they are here.

This will be the game thread, so to speak.

I really want Mendenhall. That said Carolina will probably follow Mel Kiper's advice and take Ryan Clady from Boise State or some other equally boring pick.

However, Parcells signed Long to a five-year, $57.5 million deal that included $30 million in guaranteed money – an eye-popping figure for a rookie offensive lineman. It’s a deal that makes Long the league’s highest paid offensive lineman before he’s taken a single snap. Let that sink in. Long has far outdistanced the seven-year $52.5 million deal signed by the Seattle Seahawks’ Walter Jones in 2005, as well as the seven-year, $52.8 million deal inked by Orlando Pace in 2004. Which means, in effect, that Parcells is signing player who would merely be a top 10 pick in a talent-rich draft to a No. 1 overall deal that is similar to the one given to a “marquee” quarterback last year.

Top 5 to maybe Top 10 draft picks pay scale is just whacked.

The NFL really needs to look at what the NBA does when it comes to rookie contracts. It's one thing that the NBA actually does right.

Some tidbits:

The Rams have reportedly exchanged trade ideas with the Jets, who hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

New York may want to get in front of Atlanta to secure Matt Ryan. St. Louis is currently on the clock and in great position to make a move. The Rams could also try to sign Glenn Dorsey before Saturday. With Jake Long out of the picture, ESPN's John Clayton says Dorsey is the top player on their board.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press disputes a Scout.com report that the Vikings have offered their 2008 first- and third-rounders and their 2009 second-round pick in exchange for Chiefs franchise player Jared Allen.

The proposal did seem a bit steep. If they had made that offer, it's hard to imagine K.C. hesitating, even as bad as GM Carl Peterson drafts. The Chiefs may be holding firm on their initial price: 2008 first- and second-rounders.

DO IT DO IT

As a Dolphins fan (and Bears fan) I'm pissed about the contract to Long. That is absolutely ridiculous. I would seriously rather just give away the pick than sign a rookie tackle to the largest deal ever for an OT. That's just ludicrous.

i don't get how a team can sign a guy pre-draft. these guys aren't free agents. yes, i know they have the first pick, but that doesn't guarantee anything (they run out of time, etc.)

What's their to understand? If they come to an agreement they won't run the risk of running out of time. They aren't free agents, but Miami is free to take any one of them. The rest of the team are not.

just seems weird to do it before draft day. can they not announce it until Saturday?

I don't see the big deal with this. This isn't anything new; it's happened a number of times in the past (although I don't think it has the past few years). Since the team with the #1 pick is guaranteed their choice there's no harm in reaching a deal in advance. And I don't see why it hurts to announce it either; that way other teams know he won't be available and can plan accordingly.

Texans did it with Mario Williams two years ago.

Carson Palmer was signed before the draft too.

Vikings acquired Jared Allen for their first round pick (No. 17) and two third-round picks (No. 73 and No. 82). They will pay Allen $74 million over six years, including $31 million guaranteed.

The deal is probably backloaded heavily, but he can claim to be the richest defender in NFL histroy. The teams are also expected to swap sixth-round picks. Allen will return to Minnesota today to finalize the deal. Chiefs GM Carl Peterson has been a poor drafter overall, but he did well here. Kansas City didn't want to pay Allen that much and they can truly rebuild with all these picks.

Do you all think Allen is a better fit for the Vikes than Chad Johnson is for the Skins/Boys/Eagles?

That is an awful trade for Minnesota. They are overpaying for a guy that is one strike away from a year long suspension. Terrible trade.

Well apparently he has turned his life around and doesn't even drink anymore. But yeah, still a terrible trade for the Vikes.

I figure MOST of you are Bears fans. Im a Packer fan FYI. But, I have been listening to KFAN out of the TWIN CITIES, and my god the Jared Allen love needs to end. They are acting like they just won the superbowl.

Answering my own question, if every team takes their full 10 minutes and the Bears keep their pick at 14, the Bears should be on the clock at between 5:10-5:20. Hopefully Miami doesn't take any time to announce their pick, and a couple others go early, so the Bears pick before 5:00 and I'll see them before getting on the road.

Why is the draft not coming on till 2:00pm? Its supposed to be an early in the morning last all day thing. I don't need 4 hours of pre-draft coverage. We have already had 3 months of it.

Seriously. I love sleeping til 11:45 and waking up in time to watch the whole draft. Now I have to wait 3 more hours. FTH

The solution is simple. Sleep three more hours.
