Wow.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella tried to launch a pre-emptive strike Monday at Wrigley Field when asked about his team's hot start, warning Cubs fans not to act like … well, Cubs fans.

"This is a long season," Piniella said. "Let's not get all crazy about this thing. Let's just stay cautionary and let's just keep playing good baseball, that's all."

But Piniella's message apparently didn't get through to all of his players.

After the Cubs ran their winning streak to four games with Monday night's 7-1 victory over the New York Mets, shortstop Ronny Cedeno was dreaming big.

"We're thinking about the World Series," Cedeno said. "I think we'll be OK if we keep playing like that."

Any other year I'd be screaming about tempting the fates, but with these guys, who knows?

I have to say, it's fun being a Cubs fan. What other team's fans get to go on the emotional roller coaster that we do? We win a couple games in a row and we're on our way to the World Series. We lose a couple games in a row and it's wait until next year. Love it.

Ronny Cedeno dropped a pop up at 2B in today's game. When asked by reporters if the sun contributed to losing track of the ball Cedeno says, "Nah, I was dreaming of the World Series."

Ronny is right on when he says "I think we'll be OK if we keep playing like that". problem is, it's not likely to continue being that good

If they did, we'd have the best offense in major league history.

I'd like to hear the question that was asked before he said that sentence. I doubt he just decided to tell the reporters he was thinking about the Series.

Every fan of every team in all of sports?

But for the rest of them, the rollercoaster occasionally ends on a high.

Not every team. Pirates, AZ Cardinals, Tampa Rays, LA Clippers. There's plenty of fan bases that haven't been on anything like a roller coaster.

Then there's Boston fans who may have spent time there in the past, but have basically been on cruise control to the moon for 5 years.

It's April, Ronny. You've got a LONG way to go.

That's right, Ronny. Damn you for having goals.

Agreed. He didn't say "we're going to win the world series" or make any other bold prediction. I understand one game at a time, but what's wrong with saying you're THINKING about the World Series.

You play the game to win. A good season of winning finishes in the World Series. Long Term goals.

I can see him getting picked off of first while daydreaming about the WS.

or hitting a grand slam

i dont see what the big deal is, its no different than saying i want to finish college and get my masters, i want to get married and have a family and all that other crap. im glad they are saying it.

its about time that we have players thinking about making it there, you gotta first think it and want it before you can even attempt to make it

Why can't our players ever keep their mouths shut about the World Series?

It's not that big of a deal. It's not taboo for players to talk about about the World Series.

You have a team who does nothing but talk about the world series, maybe thats why they have 26 pennants

Ronny, didn't you get the memo? We want to be competitive in the division!

Cedeno was thinking about the World Series as he was rounding the bases after his grand slam today.

At least he read the "less talk, more action" memo.

It's amazing that the fanbase of a team who's unofficial motto is "Wait till next year" suddenly has a problem with a player who says their team is thinking World Series.

Maybe people would have been happier with "We're really aiming for a wildcard spot".

I would assume their goal every year is to get to the WS.
