The Rays continue to look for a right fielder after claiming Nathan Haynes on waivers from the Angels. They are among the teams interested in Matt Murton, who is off to a strong start for at Class AAA with the Cubs. The price for Murton, however, remains high.

Rosenthal's latest.

Not that I condone trading Murton (especially for cheap), but I wonder what is the asking price the Cubs telling clubs who are interested in Murton?

It should be very high. I'm not real big on the Cubs trying to trade Murton. He is cheap, and tremendous insurance in the event that either Soriano or Fukudome get injured.

Personally, I'd ask for Longoria or Upton.

Tampa Bay wouldn't do that, unless the Cubs added a guy like Marshall or Gallagher along with Murton.

But if the Cubs are interested in a guy like Brignac, then it would make some sense.

Brignac for Murton might make a lot of sense.

He's a better SS prospect than any we have. Theriot isn't the long term answer, and I doubt Cedeno is. Brignac would give us another option within the organization.

Which I would gladly do. However I am pretty sure it would take way more than that.

Well I'd also throw in someone like Veal if they can include that Price guy.

i actually would love to see something go down with the rays...i live in clearwater, so i could go root for murton all the time...

that being said, my buddy and i had this conversation about last week and he was saying that brignac was once highly touted and then has fallen a bit recently...is that true?

His statistics suffered last year, probably mostly due to moving from the California League to the Southern League. He is still pretty highly touted by the scouting community though. He went from the 17th ranked prospect to the 39th ranked, according to BA, so he slipped but he is still highly thought of. Hitting prospects tend to get overrated as they go through the Cal League imo.

so, he is still too highly touted to get him straight up for murton then...i wonder if we could though in one more lesser player...i am not too terribly familiar with the rays farm system though...do they have anything that we should be interested in...besides the obvious choices

Given the fact that Sean Marshall is not really being used, and Matt Murton is definitely not being used, I would probably try a package of those two for Brignac. Not sure if that would do it, but if they are really interested in Murton, I would look for something along those lines.

I'd assume Cedeno would be included in any deal for Brignac, or do they have multiple SS options?

I don't think Veal would net Vincent Price in a trade, much less David Price.

Who are the starting SS's in the minor league system?

Ben Zobrist? What about Murton for Zobrist? He hasn't dazzled at the MLB level yet, and he his 26 already, but it sounds like it'd take more to get Brignac. Zobrist has good plate patience, and is a solid contact hitter. Not sure about his defense though. All I know is he was a bust when they brought him up to the majors and he's back in the minors now to work it out, I suppose

I would rather have Brignac, though. Young power hitting shortstops aren't exactly easy to come by, so it'd probably be tough to get him, but if we're giving up pieces we're not using, who cares?

There is no way the rays trade Brignac for anything short of another potential star probably a pitcher or two. Power hitting shortstops are way too rare commodity. That said, there have been questions about Brignac's staying power at shortstop and he is off to a slow start this year.

With the plethora of pitching in the Rays system, I don't think it would take pitching to get him. Davis, McGee, Price, etc? Their Minor League pitching is ridiculous.

How serious is Soriano's injury? Murt could get a callup.

Lou made it sound after the game that Sori is likely to miss "a while" so methinks Murton will be at Wrigley tomorrow

And I think that we might get an increase in production compared to what Sori has given us so far this year!

No, we're gonna do something stupid like call up Eric Patterson and anchor him to the end of the bench with Pie while Fontenot, DeRosa, and Reed Johnson play every day.
