Matt Murton simply isn't a better player than Alfonso Soriano by any stretch of the imagination. That's really all there is to it.

It's easy to assert things. It's harder to prove them.

In this case it is easy to assert and prove.

No it really isn't hard at all to prove that Soriano is a better player than Murton.

For all of Alfonso's flaws and Murton's strengths there isn't much of a comparison. The only argument that can be made is financial and that has no bearing right now.

Then why haven't you even tried to do it yet?

Again, what's wrong with what I posted:

Soriano gives you 50 points of slugging and better defense. He also brings you 30 points less OBP and the perceived need to bat in a lineup spot he doesn't belong in.

I await your response.

Soriano's OPS+ over the past three years (05,06,07): 109, 135, 123

Murton's OPS+ over the past three years (05,06,07): 132, 104, 100

Harang at 95 pitches. He should be good for two more innings.

His day is done.

If he comes up to bat this inning he'll come out. Otherwise - I could totally see him pitching next inning.

*AHEM*

So a difference of 10 points a year on average in a stat that ignores Murton's strength over Soriano (OBP) and overvalues one of Soriano's strengths (SLG)?

To be fair, I'm certainly not asserting that Murton is definitively better.

I'm saying the dropoff isn't that big from Soriano in leadoff to Murton down in the order.

And nobody saying murton is a bad ballplayer - but to say he's better than murton is ludicrous.

You really think Matt Murton and Soriano are equivalent players? Wow

Soriano is better offensively, better defensively and has more speed. Any lineup order improvement is offset by having an inferior player in the lineup.

Good thing I didn't say that, then.

ten points per year?

the 132 from murton is blown way out of proportion because it was in like 58 games. In the other two years Soriano beats him by 31 and 23 points respectively.

And since when did OPS+ ignore OBP?
