And Dusty decides to make it his first time to leave a pitcher in an inning too long.

Awesome.

I'm sure that won't be a common thing.

To be fair, I'm certainly not asserting that Murton is definitively better.

I'm saying the dropoff isn't that big from Soriano in leadoff to Murton down in the order.

And nobody saying murton is a bad ballplayer - but to say he's better than murton is ludicrous.

Sounds unpossible to me.

the 132 from murton is blown way out of proportion because it was in like 58 games. In the other two years Soriano beats him by 31 and 23 points respectively.

And since when did OPS+ ignore OBP?

It ignores the relative value of OBP and SLG.

Well, I know affeldt was warming up but...you think harang can handle one more? haha. Too bad his spot is due up in the order this inning.

Matt Murton simply isn't a better player than Alfonso Soriano by any stretch of the imagination. That's really all there is to it.

It's easy to assert things. It's harder to prove them.

Soriano's OPS+ over the past three years (05,06,07): 109, 135, 123

Murton's OPS+ over the past three years (05,06,07): 132, 104, 100

So a difference of 10 points a year on average in a stat that ignores Murton's strength over Soriano (OBP) and overvalues one of Soriano's strengths (SLG)?

ten points per year?

That also ignores that for many of those AB's he was in a platoon role which is more favorable.

If I'm being simplistic, it's because this is very simple and that's all this requires. Soriano is a much better player and it doesn't help the team to downgrade talent everyday.

WTF? Gabor Freaking Bako?

Bako is going to be some kinds of awful when he comes back to earth, which he will.

I'd just like to point out how bad this sucks for you. Because he's starting off this well, Dusty will remember this all season. Thus, it will take him FOREVER to bench him. Literally.

Sorry, even you trying to stretch the numbers doesn't help your argument. In 05 Murton only played 51 games to get that 132. We could play that same game with Theriot, and use his .934 OPS over 53 games in 06. Not to mention your argument completely dismisses any benefit of having a better defensive player or other tools, such as speed (SBs).

It'd be worse if the Reds had actual catchers that can hit sitting behind him, which they don't.

Agreed. But when the more talented player is very overrated because of his poor OBP and need to bat in a non-optimal lineup spot, the downgrade doesn't have to be significant or noticeable.

time for the CPatt game winning 3 run homer.

Not with the way he has been swinging tonight. I fully expect a K.
