If the Bears get him, I won't complain. What's one more mediocre running back?

He's leaning towards Chicago over Pittsburgh if Rotoworld's source is to be believed:

Eh. League minimum one-year deal, put him on the depth chart in training camp, see what he has left. Not much risk there.

Why would Pitt even be interested with Parker & Mendenhall on board?

Good move. I was a little concerned by Lovie's lack of interest last month, but this was needed.

solid, solid move. he's not great but considering the rb situation going into training camp, jones is the best option available for us.

I like the move too.

Training camp starts in 8 days. 1st preseasoon game is Aug 7!

This is what happens when the Cubs are doing good. This stuff creeps up on me fast.

Good move.

Now pull the trigger on Chris Simms and we can move our offense from 'terrible' to just 'below average bad'

Chris Simms would be nice. But neither he nor Jones will see enough time on the field to make a huge difference.

Simms I agree with, but Jones could realisticially see plenty of time, especially if Forte struggles.

Maybe he wants to win. Too late now.

Contrary to popular belief, the Bears are not as bad as some think. The Bears still have their Super Bowl caliber defense intact. If the Offense is even remotely average, the Bears should and could challenge for best in the NFC. Yeah, I said it.....

Pardon my pessimism, but what makes you think the Bears have even a remotely average offense?

The offensive line should make a couple strides, but all the skill position players are terrible or question marks

First of all, I said "IF" they had an offense remotely average. Second, there is plenty of offensive talent on the Bears. The PROBLEM is, they are way.............underdeveloped (Grossman) or extremely raw( Bradley and Hester). And I know the Bears should not be hedging their bets on "serious ???", but it's not as if they players don't have the talent to succeed. So, I am still holding out hope that the Bears will have an average OFFENSE next yr.

It's possible, look at the 06 offense. They were pretty average-to slightly above with similar talent. Grossman, Kreutz, Garza, McKie, and Clark are the same.....but only Grossman is NOT on the downside of his career. The skilled positions are younger, faster and more talented....but as you said, more raw. Forte and Jones are more talented than Jones/Benson. Bradley, Booker, Hester, Bennett, Olsen bring more talent to the table than Moose, Davis, and Berrian (though Berrian is/was talented).

The key is obviously gonna be the O-line. The right side of the line have to stay steady (C included) and the left side of the line has to get real good real quick. I'd also like to think that Grossman, Bradley and Hester in particular would be much improved also in the passing game.

I think the defense will be good enough. Harris healthier. Vasher, who was a huge loss, will be healthy. And the safety position should be improved from the start of the year as well.

is hester going to be on return duty, or are they taking him off to focus on the offense?

From what I've read they are going to slightly decrease his return work in order to allow him to focus more on offense. But he'll still be back there most of the time.

In Jerry Angelo's best voice on B/B, "NO."

The offense won't be remotely average. Average line, bad QB, bad RB, bad receivers=bad offense.

You're assuming a lot in that last sentence though. There's much more unknown than there is bad in the offense. I don't think you (or I) can say with any certainty what the skill level will be at RB or the line. The receivers are probably bad to below average, and QB can be debated ad nauseum...though I don't think anyone is will to go much above average in their assessment of it.

I think it's distinctly possible the offense can be an average one.

Going into 06, all anyone talked about was how bad the offense would be and how the Bears had no deep threat and needed to make a run at Deion Branch, Ashley Lelie, or Jerry Porter.

Then they went on to destroy a bunch of teams by 20-30 points for the first half of the season (while the defense was healthy).

If the run game is remotely effective, the offense will be fine. It all hinges on just how much the line improves. With the run game, the play action deep pass will follow. Should be interesting to see, but I can definitely see them having an average offense, which would be enough to be a very good team (especially with their ridiculous return game) if the defense is healthy and dominant.
