Trade Carlos Zambrano and Felix Pie to Boston for Clay Buckholz and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Then trade Ellsbury and Gallagher and maybe another minor league player or two to Baltimore for Bedard and Roberts.

We get Boston's top 2 minor league prospects. We get rid of our #1 starter who has faltered the past couple years from where he used to be when he was lights out. The first half of '07 was really scary. 7+ ERA. Trade Big Z while we can, or if we still can.

We get 2 starting pitchers, young starters, who have fine stuff. Clay pitched a no-hitter last year for Boston.

Ellsbury would be a fine piece for Baltimore to use to re-build.

Roberts is a guy Hendry wants so bad, although I would just as soon keep Derosa at 2b.

I am sure these thoughts will get scorned, but I throw them out just the same. Let me have it now.

Buchholz isn't that good. Certainly not good enough to consider for Zambrano.

You could argue that Boston might not jump at trading their top 2 major league-ready prospects for a guy who is making upwards of $20MM per year. They're not going to have to pay these two guys more than the league minimum for the next 3-5 years. That's pretty important for a team with so much crazy money already committed to their annual roster.

I think you might be wrong about Buchholz though. He could turn out to be much better than Zambrano for all we know. It's not as if he wasn't hyped in the minors. And he's done nothing to suggest that he will be any worse than Carlos.

Zambrano's first-half ERA was 4.03 in 2007. It wasn't close to 7.00.

No,

Ellsbury is David Dejesus with speed. I wouldn't trade Pie for him.

That first trade sucks for us...so I won't do it.

Also, why do you think the O's would take Ellsbury and Gallagher + one guy for Roberts and Bedard when they won't take Gallagher, Murton and Cedano for Roberts by himself.

Jacob Ellisbury is the Melky Cabrera of Boston. The organization calls him untouchable, so suddenly everyone wants him

Or to a much, much lesser extent, Felix Pie, if you change everyone wants him to some teams kind of want him.

the difference is that Ellisbury and Cabrera have at least been sorta okay at the major league level

They have similar speed, Ellsbury uses it to his advantage more than Pie currently does.

Ellsbury is a better hitter than Pie, having much better bat control.

Pie has more raw power.

Pie has the better arm.

Ellsbury has the better apporach at the plate.

Ellsbury>Pie and Melky Cabrera.

If i'm Boston, i'm not sure I want Z over Buchholz, considering age, and the fact that Buchholz might be better. And then considering Z makes a ton of money. I'm definately passing on that if i'm Boston.

Ellsbury, however, I agree is overrated. I really don't see much that leads me to believe he can consistently have an .800+ OPS at the major league level.

I like it. If you gusy do this, and we sign Mackowiack...

You may win the division, but we'll beat you head to head.

He doesn't have to with a +.370 OBP at the top of the order, 50+SBs, and very good defense in CF.

ooh 50 steals.....im convinced. oh wait that means about 15-20 caught stealing.

Don't play the stupid card w/me, save it for someone else.

He's one of the smartest and fastest baserunners in the game which adds value to his above avg. hitting abilities, approach, and defense.

Of course, last year he had 50 steals in 57 attempts (87%) which added to his offensive value.

It comes down to....

Z, Gallagher, and Pie for Roberts and Bedard.

I'd pass.

Actually, we get Roberts, Bedard, and Bucholz. Don't see any reason not to make that deal.

Of course, i'm not sure Baltimore would accept Ellsbury and Gallagher for Bedard straight up, let alone for Bedard and Roberts.

He's a big ball park stud who excels at line drives and ground balls. A quality player he may turn out to be, but he's a bad fit for the Cubs in that respect. His trade value would exceed his on field value for the Cubs, where for a team like San Diego it would be the other way around. His skill set just isn't good for Wrigley.

Wrigley would cut down on his triples, but he'd still hit for a higher avg. and draw enough BBs to maintain a high OBP.

He wouldn't be worth going after right now with Pie and Boston has no reason to unload him.

He's prob. a 56 on the OFP scale.

Wrigley will cut down on his triples (short gaps). Wrigley will cut down on his doubles (short gaps). Wrigley will cut down on his singles (high grass). The usual increase in HR power production won't benefit him as much because his game isn't built around flyballs. His speed benefit ratio would decrease due to the park tradeoff. He's just not a good fit. Not to mention outfield defense isn't as useful in the park.
