The Chicago Cubs today traded outfielder Angel Pagan to the New York Mets for Minor League right-handed pitcher Ryan Meyers and outfielder Corey Coles.

I don't know much about either of these guys, but it looks like another good move by Hendry on the surface.

Sounds like the Mets might be about ready to make a big deal involving Carlos Gomez.

Mets acquired outfielder Angel Pagan from the Cubs for outfielder Corey Coles and RHP Ryan Meyers.

Pagan returns to his original organization two years after the Mets gave him up. In 318 at-bats in the majors the last two seasons, the switch-hitter batted .255/.306/.415, which is actually a superior to his career minor league line. If he kept that up, his defense would make him a fair option as a fifth outfielder. However, he isn't anything more than that and the Mets shouldn't have room for him unless they decide not to carry Ruben Gotay. Fortunately, they didn't give up anything they're likely to miss. Coles has no chance of a career as a reserve outfielder, and Meyers is a pretty generic A-ball relief prospect.

Yeah, looks like Myers could be a decent middle guy some day, and Coles is worthless AAA roster filler. Still, good to clear a spot on the 40 man for someone like, oh I dunno, Brian Roberts.

Its also nice to know that Jim is awake.

I look forward to never hearing either of those names again.

The move does make me wonder why Hendry would want to get move a speedy guy like Pagan, though.

yay...

this has to be a precursor to another deal...

bring in some pitching jimbo <--------- i won't stop saying it and it probably won't happen anyway

I like Fuld a lot better than Pagan as a 5th OF. He's a good defender rather than a fast defender(which makes people assume you're good defensively), and he's more useful offensively(can hit some RHP while Pagan is meh against both sides).

A few points on Corey Coles from Baseball America's Prospect Handbook:

*Coles strength is a disciplined approach at the plate and his ability to make contact to all fields.

*Works the count and is tough to strike out, but has well below average power.

*Makes quality reads and jumps in the OF and can play all three positions.

*Average speed and range, and can steal an occasional base.

*Doesn't walk or run well enough to profile as a leadoff hitter or an everyday player, but has a skill set that could make him a valuable reserve player.

*Even though he pitched collegiately, he has a below average arm.

*One scout compared him to Orlando Palmeiro.

Remember folks, he is a lefty and old for a guy who hasn't broken into the big leagues (born in 1982).

Might as well hand the division to the Brewers next year. There's no way we can compete without Carlos Beltran Jr.

Why are people congratulating this as a good move? Do we give Hendry applause now for putting on his own socks? This is a move, not much to it.

I just hope that this doesn't mean at the trade deadline Jim Hendry decides he has to have a guy exactly like Pagan or something. "I want a switch-hitting 4th outfielder."

Personally I liked Pagan better than a lot of the crappy reserve outfielders that have come through Chicago in the past few years.

Could this be a move to clear a roster spot? It appears that neither of the players we got back are on the 40-man.

That looks like the only logical explanation to me.

[Clearing roster space] looks like the only logical explanation to me..

Pagan's OBP vs LHP was .269 last year and .280 over this two years. Not very appealing as your guy to share CF with Pie, who also can't touch lefties. badnews, you like Pagan better than options. I hope/assume there is some option better, even though I don't see that option on the team yet. You clearly have a higher scouting love for Pagan than I do, and apparently than Hendry.

The key to this, which I'm not sure has been mentioned, was that Pagan is out of options. Hendry got something for him now, little as it may have been. But in March Pagan would have likely needed to be waived, in which case you get nothing. And would waste spring training atbats that Pie and perhaps Fuld and Colvin might better use.

Not sure if 40-man factored. Before dropping him, were we at 40 or 39? Not sure. Any Roberts/Blanton type trade would further reduce 40-man population. Don't know, maybe there is some pickup that Hendry wants to make that would count toward 40, so somebody was going to need to be cleared.

While Pagan was a bad Pie counterpart, I don't see who is better on the existing roster. Fuld is lefty and doesn't hit lefties very well. Cedeno has played little center, and Levine suggests he may not even remain on the roster. Very likely Hendry is going to add some other OF. Without knowing who or at what cost, hard to evaluate.
