LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Chicago Cubs have signed the Frontier League's top pitcher.

The Rockford RiverHawks announced Friday that right-hander Tanner Watson was picked up by the National League team. Watson, 25, is coming off a dominating 2007 campaign in which he broke the RiverHawks' single-season and career wins records. In October, Watson became the only Frontier League player named to Baseball America magazine's All-Independent Leagues first team.

Watson is the second pitcher signed off the Rockford roster since the start of the 2007 season.

Interesting to say the least

I went to a few Frontier league games. He's decent. Nothing special due to age, but definitely worth the 0 risk shot. Best pitcher I've seen in the 3 years here.

He did alright the couple times I seen him, I think the competition made him look better, he was a man among boys given he had more talent and experience than most in the League.

It prob. was a confidence thing with him, bouncing from starter to reliever and then the high BB totals, he didn't look like a pitcher that was afraid when I seen him.

He was alright when I saw him too. I wasn't super impressed, but I don't think I have been with any pitcher in the FL. I just figured he was a guy that had talent at one point, but got hurt. Basically, he was a man among boys, but not good enough to be a major leaguer or anything.

I'm guessing the Cubs signed him to a minor league deal? He sounds like the kind of guy who'll start the season at AA/AAA rather than start with the team immediately out of spring training.

Actually he got a 3 year $8m contract. Crazy.

Well, maybe not.

My High School play in a league called the Frontier League, One can imagine my surprise and confusion when looking at the title.

I can only imagine.

I announced (radio) for the RiverHawks last summer and saw a lot of Tanner. He is good, but I doubt much will become of him. To be successful in the Frontier League, all you need to do is have one pitch with movement. He was the cream of the crop in the Frontier League, but the talent level is pathetic. He is one of the nicest guys I have met and was a great interview. I wish him the best of luck!

Our closer, Mike Marksbury, was absouletly dominant for the 'Hawks. 20 1/3 innings, 32k's, 10 bbs. He was picked up by Milwaukee during the FL All Star Break and got shelled at Brevard County (Florida State League).

It's the same league. Watson played tight end for the other team in that game you swear happened but can't prove,
