Well, allheadlinenews just put out an article that says this:

However, the Padres seemed to have caught a first base in negotiations when he offered them "one of the two or three biggest offers" in team history, ESPN reports. The terms of the contract have not been disclosed, however.

We've heard that quote before - but this is the first time I've seen that the Pads have a step up on everyone else. (Notice, this is translated from Japanese so the writing is somewhat awkward)

Multiple people on Cubs.com are saying that the Padres are offering 5/70 to Fuku?

Not that that is completely insane, but why would you ever go to the Cubs.com boards, period?

He's into torturing himself?

Let him learn on his own.

The optimist in me says whomever wrote that article just saw the "biggest offer etc." quote and slapped it on there without much knowledge of the context.

The pessimist in me says "freaking Padres."

I know this may be nothing, but I still have to say it.

Rafael Furcal. No freaking way.

That's exactly what I've been thinking this whole time. Fukudome will be Furcal the second I fear.

I thought getting Fukudome was inevitable, now I'm thinking he's the Padres to lose. Ugh.

I believe that Hendry will ultimately fumble this away at the goal line.

The Padres might even wind up getting him.

But I find it extremely hard to believe that the Padres will give Kosuke Fukudome a contract with a larger total value than Jake Peavy's recent extension (even if the AAV is less).

I don't believe it. No way the Pads outbid us. I just can't see that happening.

Sig worthy!!

It's kind of a catch-all, isn't it?

I agree - but I don't think they have to, they just have to get close. It's very possible Kaz Matsui's awful experience in NY has soured his HS teammate on media-heavy, high-pressure US markets. Mind you, I don't think SD offered 5/70 - I think 4/44 is more likely - but it seems Hendry will for sure have to go 5 years and $12m per to be able to overcome the mitigating factors.

If it's only 5/60 we have to offer, we get him. If SD offered 5/70 and we have to significantly beat that...

Fukudome's doing the throwing, not the running, right?

That's correct.

Who wants to wager how many pages of consternation this thread will be before we hear of his chosen destination? I'm calling at least 45.

And I'm okay with that. If he doesn't want to come here them screw'em!

Hopefully Kosuke remembered to remind Kaz that they pissed on him in New York because he put up a collective OPS somewhere in the .600s in two and a half seasons there.

I really don't. If the Cubs don't get him, it is simply because he wants to be on the west coast with the Padres.

In light of the silly talk of 5/70, let's not forget Alderson said this:

We didn't make a $60 million or a $50 million offer," Alderson said.

Alderson wouldn't be more specific than to say the offer is somewhere between the $30 million given to Brian Giles in December 2005 and the pending $52 million extension for Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy, which will be the biggest deal in team history.

Nikkansports - supposedly reliable - has apparently called Fuku to the Cubs. The translations are awful, so I won't stand by the information.
