Basically what those guys are saying is Jacque Jones to Fukudome is all this team needed. Wrong.

Maybe Hendry is getting indications that the Cubs are going to lose out on Fukudome and is trying to spin the story, to make him look good if he only gets Roberts.

It's definitely NOT an either-or with Fukudome and Roberts. The Cubs will be able to get both, provided all sides agree on terms.

Not that this should be at all taken as an indicator that any of the involved parties are at the point where terms are being negotiated...

...right?

Bruce, I hate to be one of those guys treating your appearances like a press conference (though you graciously don't seem to mind it!), but I'm just curious as to whether there's any truth to the rumor that the Cubs are interested in Blanton.

EDIT to make sense

Thanks, Bruce.

Good, I got worried for a second. Still no timetable?

Has there been any talk on the Chicago sports talk radio on this subject today?

According to the dudes on the Comcast Sports show a few minutes ago, Dan Plesac said earlier today that he felt Fukudome and Roberts were an "either or proposition" and that the Cubs wouldn't go after both of them. Which led to a discussion of which one would you prefer and a lot of discussion on how much Fuk's Japanese stats should be discounted.

In the clip I saw this morning, he was really skeptical of Japanese players in general. But this is also the same guy who thinks the world of people like Ryan Theriot and talked about how wonderful a player Jacque Jones is.

I don't think he's analyzing anything here, just falling back to the "that's Japan this is the majors, there's no way to compare".

In case he's reading:

Fukodome はカブスと、今日署名する!

I see what you did there.

(For the record, I was going to post that in Japanese, but apparently the best translation Babelfish could do was "I look at that thing there." :-k)

??

interesting story:

after skipping 1/3 of my semester, I wrote a term paper and translated it entirely through bablefish for my german class.

got me a C. awesome.

i didn't even use bablefish. i used some random translator i found on google

Bruce are you in Japan following the Fukudome story?

Apparently all offers are in, and Cubs are awaiting word like everybody else. The way these things go, there could be some last-minute negotiating and going back and forth. I believe the Cubs will top all offers monetarily. Then, it will depend on where the player feels most comfortable.

Haven't been there since 2000, when I covered the season-opening series. Very cool trip.

Thanks! Optimism is as high as a kite. I love the off-season.

Bruce, how quickly after Fukudome announces where he's signing could you see the Cubs making another move?

Pretty quickly. If it's a trade, they'll try to push the other team, but there's only so much of that you can do until the other team decides yes or no.

That depends on The Sweater Vest Kid.

He never moves quickly on anything. I'll be convinced the owner is staying out of the way when MacPhail trades somebody like Roberts. But this is industry-wide. We were all led to believe that the environment for trades was going to be great at the winter meetings, and you saw what happened. Well, trading Will Ohman was pretty exciting. Trades are very, very difficult to pull off these days because of contracts and such. But the Cubs appeared to have laid the groundwork for possible deals. Like Hendry or not, he can get trade talks going with anybody, and it's usually not his fault the deal can't get closed.

This is why I think Hendry has some great qualities as a GM that get overlooked. He is a good communicator and able to get talks going seemingly out of no where. His Free Agent classes can be scrutized but he trades are pretty good.

Plesac was on Comcast yesterday and he doesn't know any more about Hendry's plan than the average fan.

Multiple people on Cubs.com are saying that the Padres are offering 5/70 to Fuku?

Not that that is completely insane, but why would you ever go to the Cubs.com boards, period?
