Does the increased expected revenue from having a marquee Japanese player offset some of that cost? I have to think so, but anyone have any idea by how much?

Unless I am mistaken, all international merchandise revenue goes directly into revenue sharing, as well as online sales except for zip codes in a 200 mile radius. The only way the Cubs can profit directly off of this deal is by selling ads to Japanese, or a cable deal. One way is to have the green screen behind home plate display Japanese ads whenever Fukudome is batting, because obviously they'll get more play in Japan than say, Ryan Theriot's.

I think you've got it right, unless the newest CBA changed things.

Yup, this is the conclusion we came to last year when we were talking about Matsuzaka.

The cubs make $1M/year for two Under Armor signs that are up every day in the OF. These aren't on TV for every pitch though. I have no clue how much the behind the batter signs cost, but most likely they would only be purchased specifically when Fukudome would be batting. Its not going to be boku bucks.

No timetable has been determined on which team he's signing with, correct?

And yes - I've read as much as I could and haven't seen anything along this specific bit.

Thanks.

No specific timetable, many are reporting within 24-48 hours.

He signed with Ohio State since they made the best offer.

It looks like he's coming and it's down to 2 or 3 teams but who really knows.

Considering his performance at AAA am I the only one that thinks giving Pie the every day job and not jerking him around might ammount to something more than an automatic out?

The thought of Derosa as a starting RF for this team makes me nauseous. Displacing Pie to do so would surely make me heave.

It wouldn't be that bad if they had Tejada at SS and Roberts at 2nd but yeah, it doesn't seem to be putting out the best team they can.

I can't say I'm a fan of DeRosa manning RF every day. He provides decent production for a 2B/utility guy, but as a RF, I'd want someone better.

Soriano-Pie-Fuku would be a swell OF.

Um...why does Fuku Clock put together not get through the word filter?

Same reason ful lback doesn't make it through - apparently any word that starts with "fu" and ends with "ck" is censored.

Heh, I was trying to figure out what you had typed but you edited too quickly!

Hey and maybe after school we could go to Arnold's and get a burger and a shake! What do ya say?

The term you wanted to use there was "a malted".

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry continued to play a respectful waiting game Sunday, but people around major-league baseball expect fast action this week on Kosuke Fukudome. ...

The Cubs are expected to be the high bidder for Fukudome as the parent Tribune Co. goes out with a bang in its final throes of ownership before it sells the ballclub.

The White Sox, San Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants also are expected to inquire about Fukudome, who may pick a U.S. team as early as the first part of this week.

After shocking the baseball world last season by giving outfielder Alfonso Soriano an eight-year, $136 million contract, the Cubs appear prepared to outbid all major-league teams for Fukudome. A five-year offer, worth between $12 million and $15 million per season isn't out of the question.

You betcha! (Rubs the hair on his head)

That OF would be really good defensively.

Yes it would....probably the best defensive outfield we've had in 20 years...

From Bruce-o-Rama's column:

If the Cubs can sign Fukudome and trade for Roberts, they can use the versatile Mark DeRosa in a "super" utility role, playing him at all four infield spots and at the outfield corners when one of the regulars is injured or needs a rest.

Imagine actually having 3 OF's that could throw runners out? And not by accident? I have a feeling the only kink would be if Soriano's leg is a chronic problem.

if derosa's capable of playing ss, he damn well better be playing everyday.

The Giants are interested in making a late push for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, who was expected to announce his intentions to leave Japan for the major leagues late Monday night.

A Giants official said the club remains in the running for the Japanese free agent, whom the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres have aggressively courted. Fukudome is expected to receive a contract exceeding four years and $44 million.

Fukudome's U.S.-based agent, Joe Urbon, confirmed he has spoken with San Francisco officials but described the talks as "limited and infrequent."

He did play there for a game last year. Does anyone remember which game that was? I can't say I remember it.
