Nikkansports - supposedly reliable - has apparently called Fuku to the Cubs. The translations are awful, so I won't stand by the information.

Called as in predicted or called as in "confirmed?"

JeffH quotes from the man himself: "I won't be playing for a Japanese club next season, I'll play in the majors," Fukudome said. "I appreciate the fans who supported me for nine years. I hope that the fans continue to root for me when they see me playing in the United States."

---- "JeffH" just beat me to the punch. As Fukudome's agent previously reported, his coming to America doesn't become official until Fukudome himself, declares he is coming to play in the Majors.

At the time of my original post, an ice storm hit the state of Kansas...and now 11 hours later---- after the electricity FINALLY came back on...I'm finally back on line again! And what no Fukudome?

Can you provide the link to the nikkansports page you're alluding to. Let me see if I can translate better.

Nikkan Sports is probably the omst reputable Japanese source. I'd translate as much as I could, but I am not with my computer and the one I am using does not have japanese font installed and I'm not going to take the liberty to do it on someone else's computer.

My perception is the article is merely stating the Cubs have made the largest offer - 4 or 5 years 60 million.

The Cubs, San Diego Padres and possibly the White Sox appeared to still be in the running for Japan's top free agent hitter as the Fukudome Sweepstakes stretched late into Tuesday night.

The agent for outfielder Kosuke Fukudome spoke Tuesday with major league teams for the first time since Fukudome officially declared his availability to U.S. teams early Tuesday morning.

Agent Joe Urbon, who did not return several messages throughout the day Tuesday, has repeatedly said he expected Fukudome to agree to terms with a team quickly upon deciding to come overseas, possibly within one day.

Indications Tuesday night suggested that the Cubs and Padres in particular were heavily involved in a process that still looked like it could be completed as early as late Tuesday night (early Wednesday afternoon in Japan). The White Sox were thought to still be alive in the bidding, while the fourth finalist, the Texas Rangers, appeared to have fallen out.

The San Francisco Giants, who showed late interest this week, could be a wild card but as of late Tuesday afternoon did not appear to be a serious threat to the Cubs' pursuit.

Barring a surprise team swooping in at the last minute, the Cubs still looked like the favorite, according to multiple industry sources.

Somewhere in between, though my kana recognition will win no awards. It sounded pretty definitive, but I don't think it was "confirmed" in the sense of, the agent confirmed it.

Just IM'd my friend from Japan, who happens to be a Dragon's fan and he said the article states that Fukudome is "probably" going to the Cubs.
